The Complete Ha Long Bay Guide: Cruises, Caves, and Karsts
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage seascape of nearly 2,000 limestone karsts rising from emerald waters in northeastern Vietnam. It's one of those places where the photos don't exaggerate — if anything, they undersell the scale.
Overview
The bay covers 1,553 square kilometers of the Gulf of Tonkin, about 170km east of Hanoi. The karsts formed over 500 million years of geological uplift, erosion, and sea-level changes. Some rise 100+ meters straight from the water. Others contain caves, grottoes, and hidden lagoons.
The name means "descending dragon" — legend says a family of dragons created the islands by spitting jade and jewels.
Best Time to Visit
October to April: Dry season, clearer skies. October-November is ideal. December-February is cooler (15-20°C) with fog.
May to September: Hot (30-35°C), occasional typhoons (mainly July-Sept). Cruises may cancel.
March-April: Warmest dry weather, busy season.
Getting There
From Hanoi: Express bus 3.5-4 hours via new expressway (VND 200,000-350,000). Most cruise operators include door-to-door shuttle transfers ($25-35/person).
Cruise Options
Day Trip ($30-50)
Not recommended. Rushed, crowded section only, 7 hours of driving for 3 hours on water.
2 Days / 1 Night ($80-250)
The minimum. Budget boats from $80 (safety concerns — see tips). Mid-range $150-250 (Bhaya, Indochina Junk). Includes meals, kayaking, cave visits, and tai chi.
3 Days / 2 Nights ($200-500)
The sweet spot. Reaches Bai Tu Long Bay (less touristed), floating villages, and more remote islands. Luxury options (Paradise Elegance, Au Co) from $300-500.
What You'll See
Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave
Largest cave in the bay. Two massive chambers, stalactites, colored lighting. 100+ steps to entrance. Included in most cruises. Best visited early morning.
Kayaking Through Lagoons
Paddle through hidden lagoons, sea arches, and karst channels. Luon Cave and Dark & Bright Cave are popular paddle-through grottoes. Most cruises include 1-2 hours. Bring reef shoes.
Ti Top Island
427-step climb to panoramic viewpoint overlooking the karst field. Small beach at base. Named after a Soviet cosmonaut who visited with Ho Chi Minh in 1962.
Cat Ba Island
Largest island. National Park ($5), Hospital Cave, Cannon Fort. Good for independent exploration. Budget alternative to cruise-based trips.
Floating Villages
Cua Van and Vung Vieng — traditional fishing communities visited by rowing boat or kayak. Quieter, more reflective than the caves.
Bai Tu Long Bay
The less-touristed extension northeast. Same dramatic karsts, fraction of the boats. Only accessible on 2-3 night cruises.
