Nairobi in July: The Great Migration Season and Why Timing Is Everything
If you're planning a Kenya trip, July is the month. Not because Nairobi itself changes much (the climate is pleasant year-round at 1,795m elevation), but because July marks the beginning of the most spectacular wildlife event on Earth: the Great Migration arriving in the Masai Mara.
And Nairobi is your gateway.
Why July
The Weather
Nairobi in July sits at 15-22°C during the day, dropping to 10-12°C at night. The long rains (March-May) have ended and the landscape is green and lush. Skies are often clear in the morning with occasional afternoon clouds. This is dry season — the best time for both city sightseeing and safari.
The Migration
Between July and October, approximately 1.5 million wildebeest (plus hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles) cross from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Masai Mara, following the rains and fresh grass. The river crossings — thousands of wildebeest plunging into crocodile-filled waters — are the headline event.
The Masai Mara is 270 km from Nairobi (5-6 hour drive or 1-hour flight with Safarilink or AirKenya). July is peak season for lodges, so book early.
Nairobi's Own Wildlife
Nairobi National Park is at its best in dry season. With less vegetation, animals are easier to spot. Lions, rhinos, giraffes, and buffalo are all more visible. Entry is $60 USD for foreign adults. Morning game drives (arrive at 6AM gate opening) offer the best viewing.
What to Do in Nairobi in July
Safari Prep Days
Most travelers spend 1-2 days in Nairobi before heading to the Mara. Here's how to use them:
Day 1:
Morning: Nairobi National Park game drive (3-4 hours, $60 entry, guide at gate ~KES 3,000)
11AM: David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage ($15 entry, book online at sheldrickwildlifetrust.org)
Afternoon: Giraffe Centre in Langata (KES 1,500, ~$11 USD, hand-feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes)
Dinner: Carnivore restaurant (KES 5,000, the signature rotating game meat grill)
Day 2:
Morning: Nairobi National Museum (KES 1,200) and Snake Park (KES 600)
Afternoon: Karen Blixen Museum (KES 1,200) and optional Ngong Hills hike (2-3 hours, stunning Rift Valley views)
Evening: K'Osewe in the CBD for authentic Luo-style grilled fish with ugali (~KES 600)
The Masai Mara: What to Know
Getting there: Fly from Nairobi's Wilson Airport (Safarilink or AirKenya, $150-250 one-way, 1 hour) or drive (5-6 hours, last hour on rough roads). Flying saves a full day of travel.
Conservancy fees: $70-120 USD per day depending on the conservancy. The Masai Mara National Reserve itself charges $80/day.
Accommodation: Budget group camping from $150/night. Mid-range tented camps $250-400/night. Luxury camps (Angama Mara, &Beyond Kichwa Tembo) $500-1,500/night. All include game drives and meals.
Duration: Minimum 2 nights/3 days. Three nights is ideal for seeing the migration and having time for multiple game drives at different times of day.
Booking: Use licensed operators only. Check registrations at tourism.go.ke. Budget group safaris run $200-400 per person for 3 days. Private tours $400-800. Very cheap offers often mean poor vehicles and unlicensed guides.
For a completely different wildlife experience, Costa Rica offers rainforest biodiversity — sloths, toucans, and monkeys in cloud forests — on a smaller but equally magical scale.
July-Specific Events
Madaraka Day (June 1, but celebrations extend into July) — national celebrations marking self-governance
Safari Rally (usually late June/July) — WRC rally event in Kenya
School holiday season — Kenyan families travel domestically, so popular parks are busier
Packing for July
Layers (morning game drives are cold — 10°C at dawn)
Neutral-colored clothing for safari (khaki, olive, brown — no bright colors)
Binoculars (essential for game drives)
Camera with zoom lens (200mm minimum for wildlife)
Sunscreen and hat (equatorial sun is intense even when cool)
Light rain jacket (rare in July but possible)
Good walking shoes for Nairobi sightseeing
Insect repellent (less essential in dry season but still useful)

The Honest Warning
July is peak season. Everything is more expensive. Mara lodges book up months ahead. Flights sell out. If you're coming in July, book accommodation and transport by March at the latest.
But the payoff — watching 100,000 wildebeest thundering across the Mara River while crocodiles wait below — is one of the most extraordinary things you can witness on this planet.
