A free shuttle bus connects the AlUla Visitor Centre (Winter Park) to Hegra, Dadan, and other sites. This is the only way to reach Hegra — private vehicles are not allowed inside the archaeological zone. Shuttles run every 20-30 minutes during opening hours. Arrive 15 minutes before your tour slot.
All major AlUla sites (Hegra, Dadan, Old Town) require pre-booked tickets through experiencealula.com. Walk-ups are not accepted. Book at least 1 week ahead during peak season (Dec-Feb). The website also bundles transport from the visitor center. Photography is encouraged everywhere.
Saudi's dress code has relaxed significantly for tourists. Women no longer need an abaya but should cover shoulders and knees in public. Men should avoid sleeveless tops. At desert resorts, the atmosphere is more relaxed. Respect prayer times — some shops close briefly 5 times daily.
AlUla positions itself as a luxury destination. Hotels range from 400-2,000+ SAR/night ($100-530+). Habitas AlUla and Banyan Tree are the top properties. Budget options are limited — Airbnb-style apartments from 200 SAR exist in the new town. Meals at resort restaurants run 80-200 SAR; local cafes are much cheaper at 20-40 SAR.
Saudi Arabia does not permit alcohol. No bars, no hotel minibars, no duty-free allowance. Non-alcoholic beer and mocktails are widely available. This also means no nightlife in the Western sense — evenings are spent at desert dinners, stargazing sessions, or cultural events.
Nabataean tombs nearly 2,000 years old, a concert hall made of mirrors, and a sky thick with stars — here are the 12 experiences in AlUla worth building a trip around, with prices, timings, and exactly when to go.
Day 1: The mirrored building disappeared into the landscape. Day 2: I stood where civilizations carved their names into rock for 3,000 years. Day 3: The stars.
Same civilization, same rock-cut tombs, completely different experiences. One is Jordan's star attraction. The other is Saudi Arabia's newest.
Pre-booking is mandatory and walk-ups get turned away. No alcohol anywhere. And the best photos happen at times nobody tells you about.
