Free. Moderate difficulty, allow 2.5-3 hours one-way. No shade — bring water and sunscreen. Combine with a swim at Praia da Marinha (one of Europe's best beaches).

A 60-km barrier island lagoon system near Faro teeming with birdlife (flamingos, spoonbills) and deserted island beaches. Take a ferry from Faro or Olhao to Ilha Deserta (Barreta Island) — ~4 EUR round trip — for arguably the Algarve's most unspoiled beach. Boat tours: ~30-40 EUR for 4-island tour. The Olhao fish market is one of Portugal's best. Allow a full day.

Europe's southwestern-most point — dramatic wind-swept cliffs where the Atlantic crashes 75 meters below. Sagres Fortress (3 EUR) has a mysterious giant stone compass rose. Cape St. Vincent's lighthouse marks where Prince Henry the Navigator launched the Age of Discovery. The sunsets here are extraordinary. Best seafood in the Algarve at O Telheiro do Infante (mains 12-18 EUR).

Home to over 40 golf courses — Europe's premier golf destination. Top courses: Vale do Lobo (from 130 EUR/round), Quinta do Lago (from 150 EUR), and the clifftop Pine Cliffs (from 100 EUR). Most courses are open year-round with mild winter golf weather (15-18°C). Golf packages with hotel deals are widely available. Book tee times at algarvegolf.net.

FAO is compact. Allow 2 hours before international flights. Last-minute pastéis de nata at the airport cafe (1.50 EUR)
US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens enter Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days. Indian citizens need a Schengen visa via VFS Global (~80 EUR, 2-4 weeks). ETIAS pre-authorization may be required for non-EU citizens starting 2025 (7 EUR, valid 3 years).
The Algarve stretches 150 km east to west. The train connects Faro to Lagos (1.5 hours, ~8 EUR) along the coast but doesn't reach beaches or cliffs. Rent a car (from ~20 EUR/day at FAO airport) to properly explore. The A22 motorway runs the length of the coast but requires a Via Verde toll device (ask the rental company). Parking is free at most beaches in low season.
Portugal has Europe's highest per-capita seafood consumption and it shows. A grilled fish lunch with salad and wine at a local tasca costs 10-15 EUR. The cataplana (seafood stew) for two: 25-35 EUR. Piri-piri chicken: 8-12 EUR. Avoid beach bar restaurants (2x prices). The best deals are at inland town restaurants or fish markets in Olhao, Quarteira, and Lagos.
Lagos and the west have the best budget accommodation (hostels from 20 EUR, guesthouses from 50 EUR) and nightlife. The east (Tavira, Olhao, Cacela Velha) is quieter, more authentic, and slightly cheaper for dining. The overbuilt central strip (Albufeira, Vilamoura) caters to package tourism with inflated prices. Shoulder season (May, October) offers 40% savings across the region.
The biggest mistake tourists make: arriving at Benagil beach at noon expecting to easily visit the cave. In summer, kayak tours book out days in advance, the beach is tiny and packed, and afternoon sun means the cave interior is shadowed. Book a kayak or SUP tour for early morning (8-9AM) when the skylight casts a golden beam inside. Swimming to the cave is risky due to boat traffic.
Algarve cliffs are limestone and actively eroding — cliff collapses happen annually, sometimes fatally. Never stand on cliff edges or below overhangs. Stay behind railings and fences on coastal walks. Beach areas directly below cliffs can be dangerous, especially at high tide. Check local signage for 'danger of collapse' warnings. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is exposed — watch children carefully.
StoriesDay-by-day diary of a week driving Portugal's south coast — from Sagres windswept cliffs to Benagil's cathedral cave, with way too much cataplana in between.
TipsBook Benagil at 8AM. Drive west of Albufeira. And for the love of Portugal, try the cataplana. Everything I learned after four trips to southern Portugal.
StoriesThere's a particular quality of light in southern Portugal that makes everything — the cliffs, the water, the grilled sardines — look like a painting that hasn't quite dried.
