Mobile coverage drops off sharply outside the city, especially on roads to Charyn Canyon and Big Almaty Lake. Download offline Google Maps or Maps.me before heading out. The mountain roads can be rough — potholes and unpaved sections are common. Always carry water and warm layers for mountain excursions, even in summer.
Big Almaty Lake sits at 2,511m and Shymbulak goes up to 3,200m. If you've flown in from sea level, take it easy on day one. Mild altitude symptoms (headache, shortness of breath) are possible. Avoid alcohol before high-altitude excursions. Drink extra water. The weather changes fast in the mountains — carry layers even on sunny days.
If invited to a Kazakh home, accept tea and food offerings — refusing is considered rude. Beshbarmak (boiled meat on noodles) is the national dish. Kumis (fermented mare's milk) is an acquired taste but culturally important. At restaurants, try lagman (pulled noodle soup), manty (steamed dumplings), and shashlik (grilled meat skewers).
