Auroville covers 20 sq km with no public transport inside. Rent a bicycle (100-200 INR/day) or scooter (300-500 INR/day) from guesthouses or the Visitor Centre area. The red laterite dirt roads are mostly flat but bumpy. From Chennai airport, pre-book a taxi (2,500-3,500 INR, 2.5 hours) or take a bus to Puducherry (250-400 INR, 3 hours) and then an auto-rickshaw (200-300 INR, 20 minutes) to Auroville.
You cannot simply walk into the Matrimandir. Step 1: Visit the Visitor Centre and watch the introductory video. Step 2: Register for inner chamber meditation (next-day slots, free). Step 3: Return the next morning in white clothing. If you only have one day, you can see the Matrimandir from the viewing point (no booking needed, open 10AM-12PM and 2PM-4PM, closed Tuesdays). The inner chamber experience is profoundly worth the extra day.
Auroville is a living community, not a theme park. Don't wander into residential areas without invitation. Photography rules vary — always ask at each unit. The community runs on volunteerism and consciousness — engage genuinely. Alcohol is discouraged (available in Puducherry). Dress modestly, especially at the Matrimandir. If you want to go deeper, volunteer stays (minimum 2 weeks) give access to community life that day visitors never see.
Auroville guesthouses: 1,000-3,500 INR/night (must book through auroville.org). Meals at community kitchens and cafes: 150-400 INR. Auroville products (pottery, clothing, food) are premium-priced but high quality. Budget 2,500-4,000 INR/day. Puducherry (10km away) has cheaper accommodation (500-1,500 INR) if you want to day-trip into Auroville.
Even in winter, midday temperatures hit 32°C with strong UV. Carry 2 liters of water, wear sunscreen SPF50+, and plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon. The red laterite roads reflect heat. Cycling in midday heat is exhausting. Mosquitoes are active at dusk — carry repellent. Dengue is present in the region during monsoon season. Nearest hospital: JIPMER in Puducherry (15km), one of India's best government hospitals.
StoriesPriya moved to this experimental township from Mumbai in 2014. She has a lot of thoughts about day-trippers who treat the Matrimandir like a selfie spot.
TipsI showed up without registering, wore the wrong clothes to the Matrimandir, and tried to use cash at a place that doesn't use money. Learn from my mistakes.
Travel Guides3,000 people from 60 nations, living without money or religion, centered around a golden meditation sphere. Auroville is either the future or the strangest place on Earth. Possibly both.
