Airport transfer and departure(30-45 minutes)

Most nationalities get a 30-day Visa on Arrival for 500,000 IDR (~$32) payable at the airport. Can be extended once for another 30 days at immigration offices in Denpasar or Kuta (500,000 IDR, allow 5 business days). Pay in IDR at the counter — the USD amount they quote is usually worse.
Rent a scooter for 60,000-80,000 IDR/day (~$4-5) — the cheapest and most flexible way to explore. International driving permit required. For longer distances, hire a private driver for 500,000-700,000 IDR/day (~$33-46) for 8-10 hours including fuel. Taxis are scarce outside tourist areas. Grab works but is banned in some areas due to local driver unions.
Always wear a sarong and sash at temples (usually provided free or for a small donation). Never stand higher than a priest or shrine. Women on their menstrual period are asked not to enter temples — this is a deeply held religious belief and should be respected. Don't point your feet at shrines.
Bali's Nyepi (Hindu New Year, usually March) is a 24-hour island-wide shutdown — no flights, no driving, no leaving your hotel, all lights off. The airport closes. If your trip overlaps, plan accordingly. The night before features Ogoh-Ogoh parades with giant demon statues — spectacular to watch.
Macaques at Monkey Forest and Uluwatu are bold thieves. Secure sunglasses, phones, and jewelry before entering. Do not make eye contact, show teeth (they interpret it as aggression), or carry food openly. If a monkey grabs something, don't fight — temple staff will help negotiate its return (sometimes with a peanut bribe).
Cheap mixed drinks at some beach bars contain arak (local rice spirit) that may be contaminated with methanol — this has caused tourist deaths. Stick to beer, established cocktail bars, or sealed spirits. If a cocktail is suspiciously cheap (~20,000 IDR), the arak quality is likely questionable. Symptoms of methanol poisoning: blurred vision and headache.
Local warungs (family-run eateries) serve nasi goreng or nasi campur for 20,000-35,000 IDR (~$1.30-2.30) vs. 80,000-150,000 IDR at tourist restaurants. The best warungs: Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud (suckling pig, 50,000 IDR), Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku for chicken. Look for places packed with locals.
Clear skies, perfect surf, temple ceremonies in full swing, and the Kecak dance at sunset — dry season Bali delivers the island at its absolute peak.
Seven days. Three regions. One volcanic sunrise that made the 2AM alarm worth it. An honest account of first-time Bali.
Yes, the rice terraces photograph well. But the real Bali is in a pre-dawn volcano trek, a water temple purification, and a $1.30 nasi campur at a warung your taxi driver swears by.
