Citizens of 54 countries (including US, UK, Canada, Australia) can stay 144 hours visa-free when transiting through Beijing to a third country. You must have a confirmed onward ticket to a different country. Register at the immigration counter on arrival. This is a transit exemption — you cannot enter from and leave to the same country.
Beijing's subway (27 lines, 800+ km) is fast, clean, and cheap (3-9 CNY per ride). Get a Yikatong transit card (20 CNY deposit) or use Alipay/WeChat Pay QR codes. Lines 1 and 2 hit most tourist sites. Avoid rush hour (7:30-9AM, 5-7PM). The airport express to PEK is 25 CNY. Didi (Chinese Uber) is best for point-to-point trips.
Public buses to Mutianyu and Badaling exist but are slow. The most reliable option is a private car through your hotel (400-600 CNY round trip with 3-4 hour wait). Avoid aggressive tour hawkers at subway stations offering 'Great Wall tours' for 100 CNY — these are bait-and-switch scams that include forced shopping stops at jade or silk factories.
Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and most Western social media are blocked in China. Download and configure a VPN before you arrive — VPN apps cannot be downloaded from app stores inside China. WeChat is the essential local app for messaging, payments, and booking taxis.
The Forbidden City, Great Wall sections, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven all require advance online booking with passport number. Same-day tickets are frequently sold out, especially on weekends and holidays. Avoid National Day week (Oct 1-7) at all costs — 800 million domestic trips happen during that period.
China is almost entirely cashless — street vendors, taxis, even temples accept WeChat Pay or Alipay. Foreign visitors can now link international Visa/Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay. Set this up before your trip. Some places genuinely cannot process cash or foreign cards. Keep ~500 CNY as emergency backup.
Friendly English-speaking locals near Tiananmen or Wangfujing invite you for 'tea' or 'to practice English.' You end up at a private tea house with a bill of 500-2000 CNY. The locals and tea house are working together. Rule: never follow strangers to a restaurant or tea house they suggest. This scam has persisted for 20+ years.
Travel GuidesOne is imperial and sprawling, the other is cosmopolitan and electric. After visiting both multiple times, here's how they actually compare.
Travel GuidesEverything I wish someone had told me before my first trip to Beijing — from dodging the tea house scam to finding the perfect Peking duck at 2AM.
SeasonalWhen the ginkgo trees turn gold and the sky goes impossibly blue, Beijing transforms into a completely different city.
