Top Highlights

Brandenburg Gate
Berlin's most iconic landmark — a neoclassical triumphal arch (1791) that symbolized division during the Cold War and reunification since 1989. Free to visit, open 24/7. Best at dawn (empty) or dusk (lit up). The Pariser Platz in front hosts events year-round. The Reichstag building (free rooftop dome with panoramic views, book at bundestag.de 2-3 weeks ahead) is a 5-minute walk north.

East Side Gallery
The longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall (1.3 km), transformed into the world's largest open-air gallery with 100+ murals including the famous 'Fraternal Kiss' by Dmitri Vrubel. Free to visit, open 24/7. Along the Spree River in Friedrichshain. Best in the morning for photos without crowds. Combined with a walk along the Oberbaum Bridge. Allow 1-1.5 hours.

Museum Island (Museumsinsel)
Five world-class museums on one island: Pergamon (currently partially closed for renovation), Neues Museum (Egyptian bust of Nefertiti), Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode Museum, and Altes Museum. Individual tickets: 12-14 EUR each, or Museum Island pass: 22 EUR (all 5). Open 10AM-6PM (Thu until 8PM), closed Mondays. Allow a full day if visiting 2-3 museums.

Holocaust Memorial (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe)
A haunting field of 2,711 concrete stelae of varying heights designed by Peter Eisenman. Free to walk through, open 24/7. The underground Information Centre (free, closed Mondays) provides personal stories and historical context. Allow 1 hour. Located between Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. Respectful behavior expected — it is a memorial, not a playground.

Kreuzberg & Street Art
The real Berlin — the city's most culturally diverse neighborhood with world-class street art, Turkish markets, punk bars, and the best doner kebab in Germany (Mustafa's Gemuse Kebap at Mehringdamm, ~5 EUR, expect 30-min queues). Visit the Markthalle Neun street food market (Thursday 5-10PM). Walk along Oranienstrasse and Schlesische Strasse for the densest street art. Free to explore.

Techno Culture & Nightlife
Berlin's club scene is world-famous. Berghain (Tresor Records), widely considered the world's best techno club, has a notoriously selective door. Other options: Tresor, Watergate, and KitKat Club. Clubs open Friday/Saturday midnight and run until Monday morning. Cover: 10-20 EUR. Cash only at most clubs. No phones on the dance floor (cameras are taped over at Berghain). The experience starts at 2AM.

Checkpoint Charlie & Berlin Wall Documentation Center
The famous Cold War crossing point between East and West Berlin. The outdoor area is free but touristy. Skip the overpriced private museum (14.50 EUR) and instead visit the free Berlin Wall Documentation Center on Bernauer Strasse (open 10AM-6PM, closed Mondays) — far more informative with preserved wall sections, watchtower remains, and the Chapel of Reconciliation.

Travel Tips
Visa & Entry
Schengen Zone Entry
US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens can enter Germany visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days (Schengen area). Indian citizens need a Schengen visa via VFS Global (processing: 2-4 weeks, ~80 EUR). ETIAS pre-authorization (7 EUR) may be required for non-EU visitors from 2025.
transport
BVG Public Transport Is Excellent
Berlin's BVG system (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus) runs 24/7 on weekends. Single ticket (AB zones): 3.20 EUR, day pass: 8.80 EUR, 7-day pass: 38 EUR. Airport Express trains (FEX/RE) from BER to Hauptbahnhof: 3.80 EUR with AB+C ticket. Berlin is also Europe's best cycling city — rent a bike from Donkey Republic or Lime (1 EUR unlock + 0.15 EUR/min).
Local Customs
Cash Is King in Berlin
The biggest mistake tourists make: assuming Berlin is cashless. Many restaurants, bars, clubs, and smaller shops are cash-only (Bargeld). Even some supermarkets don't take international credit cards. Carry at least 50-100 EUR in cash. ATMs (Geldautomat) are plentiful — use Sparkasse or Deutsche Bank ATMs to avoid fees. Always ask 'Nehmen Sie Karte?' before ordering.
Sunday Is Dead — Plan Ahead
By law, almost all shops and supermarkets are closed on Sundays in Germany (Ruhetag). Stock up on Saturday. Open on Sundays: restaurants, cafes, bakeries, museums, flea markets (Mauerpark flea market is a Sunday institution), and convenience stores at train stations (Hauptbahnhof has a large shopping area open Sundays). Pharmacies rotate Sunday duty.
Budget
Berlin Is Europe's Cheapest Capital
A doner kebab: 4-6 EUR, a beer (0.5L) at a Spatshop: 1-2 EUR, street food at Markthalle Neun: 5-8 EUR, club entry: 10-20 EUR. Many world-class museums are free or under 10 EUR. Free walking tours (tip-based) run daily from Brandenburg Gate. Berlin is significantly cheaper than London, Paris, or Amsterdam for food, drink, and accommodation.
Safety
Safe City with Standard Precautions
Berlin is very safe by major city standards. Public transport is safe at night, most neighborhoods are walkable after dark. Areas around Gorlitzer Park (Kreuzberg) and Kottbusser Tor have some drug activity but are not dangerous. Keep an eye on bags at outdoor cafe tables and at busy train stations. Emergency number: 112. Police: 110.
