Mountain weather changes rapidly — sunny mornings can turn to hailstorms by afternoon. Always carry rain gear, warm layers, sunscreen, and 2+ liters of water on any trek. Altitude sickness is possible above 3,000m (Song Kul, mountain passes). Rivers can flash-flood after rain. Always trek with a guide in unfamiliar areas. Download offline maps — there's no mobile signal in the mountains.
Community Based Tourism (cbtkyrgyzstan.kg) is a network of locally-run guesthouses, yurt stays, guides, and horse trek operators across Kyrgyzstan. Prices are standardized and fair, and money goes directly to local families. CBT offices exist in Bishkek, Karakol, Kochkor, and Naryn. Book 1-2 days ahead in peak season (July-August).
English is very rare outside Bishkek hotels. Learning 'rahmat' (thank you in Kyrgyz), 'spasibo' (thank you in Russian), and 'skolko stoit?' (how much? in Russian) will transform your interactions. Google Translate with downloaded Russian and Kyrgyz offline packs is essential. Nomadic families are incredibly hospitable — a smile goes a long way.
