Saltwater crocodiles inhabit rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters north of Cairns. NEVER swim in rivers, creeks, or non-designated ocean areas. Obey all warning signs. The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and resort pools are safe. Croc attacks are rare but fatal — this is not a joke warning.
Box jellyfish and Irukandji are present in coastal waters Nov-May. All reef operators provide stinger suits. On the outer reef (beyond the shelf), stingers are rare year-round. Always wear the suit — don't be the tourist who thinks they'll be fine. Vinegar stations are on all beaches as first aid.
The compact CBD is walkable. Airport to city is AUD $15-20 by shuttle or AUD $25-30 by taxi (7 km). Rent a car only for Daintree/Tablelands trips (AUD $50-70/day). Tour operators provide hotel pickup for reef and rainforest day trips. Night markets on the Esplanade are a short walk from most hotels.
Cairns runs on tourism, so combo deals are everywhere. A reef + Kuranda rail + Skyrail package saves AUD $30-50 vs booking separately. Book through your hostel/hotel tour desk for discounts, or try booking.com experiences. Reef trips are cheapest on Tuesday/Wednesday (lower demand).
Avoid the common mistake of writing off Dec-April entirely. The wet season brings spectacular waterfalls, dramatic thunderstorms, fewer tourists, and lower prices. Reef trips still run most days. The trade-off: higher humidity, occasional cyclones, and marine stingers (suits provided). Shoulder months (Nov, May) offer the best of both.
SeasonalDry season or wet season? Stinger suits or sunburn? From croc mating season to whale migration, here's when Cairns delivers its best — and when to pack an umbrella the size of a car.
