Most nationalities (including US, UK, EU, India, Australia) must apply for an ETA online at eta.gov.lk before arrival. Tourist ETA costs $50 USD (30-day stay, extendable to 90 days). Processing is usually instant but apply 48 hours before travel. Indian nationals can also get a 30-day visa on arrival.
The most efficient way to see Sri Lanka is hiring a private driver/guide for $50-70 USD/day (including fuel and their meals/accommodation). They know the roads, suggest stops, and handle the chaotic traffic. Book through your hotel or reputable agencies like Sri Lanka Tailor Made. Trains are scenic but slow — the Kandy-Ella route is worth the time.
Sri Lankan rice and curry (a plate with rice, 3-5 curries, sambol, and papadam) costs 300-600 LKR (~$0.90-1.80) at local restaurants vs 1,500-3,000 LKR at tourist spots. Kottu roti (chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables and curry) is the street food staple (~400 LKR). String hoppers for breakfast are a must-try. Budget 3,000-5,000 LKR/day for food.
Most archaeological sites and national parks charge foreigners significantly more than locals. Sigiriya is $30 for foreigners vs 100 LKR for locals. This is official government policy, not a scam. Budget $20-40/day for entrance fees if visiting major sites. The Cultural Triangle ticket ($50) covers Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura.
Cover shoulders and knees at all Buddhist and Hindu temples. Remove shoes and hats before entering. Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue — it's considered deeply disrespectful and is actually illegal in Sri Lanka. Don't touch monks. Women cannot touch or hand objects directly to monks.
Never buy gems from strangers or tuk-tuk drivers who take you to 'special shops' — Sri Lanka's gem scam is well-documented. Only buy certified gems from reputable dealers in Colombo's gem quarter (Sea Street). Agree on tuk-tuk fares before getting in — a typical Colombo ride should cost 200-500 LKR, not the 2,000+ LKR sometimes quoted.
Travel GuidesCeylon tea was born in these hills. The factories are still running, the plantations are still green, and the cup you drink at the source tastes different.
Travel GuidesThe dual pricing, the driver situation, the tea train booking, and whether Sigiriya is worth $30. All answered honestly.
StoriesThe Kandy-to-Ella train costs $1.80 and crosses the Nine Arches Bridge. It might be the most beautiful rail journey on Earth.
