One of the last populations of critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins (~90 remaining) in the Mekong near the Cambodian border. Boat trips from Don Khon's southern tip: LAK 80,000-120,000 (~$4-6) per person in a shared longboat. Best sightings early morning (6-8AM) and late afternoon. Dolphins surface 5-15 times per trip. Season: December-May when water is low and clear.
A thundering series of rapids and waterfalls where the Mekong forces through a narrow rocky channel between Don Khon's western edge. Entry: LAK 35,000 (~$1.75). Open daylight hours. The volume is staggering in wet season (August-October). Viewpoints are well maintained with railings. Allow 1 hour. The falls are said to trap evil spirits — locals believe no boat can survive them.
Float lazily down the Mekong in an inner tube between Don Det and Don Khon — the quintessential 4,000 Islands activity. Tubes rent for LAK 20,000-30,000 (~$1-1.50) per day from guesthouses. The gentle current takes you downstream in 1-2 hours. Avoid tubing in wet season when currents strengthen significantly. Bring waterproof phone protection and sunscreen.
Walk or cycle across the old French colonial railway bridge connecting Don Det and Don Khon — the only railway ever built in Laos (constructed 1893 to portage goods past the rapids). Free to cross. The rusting locomotive and original railway tracks remain on Don Khon. A beautiful 10-minute walk with river views. Combine with cycling the Don Khon loop (12km, 2-3 hours).
Don Det's signature experience: claim a riverside hammock at your guesthouse and watch the Mekong flow past as fishermen cast nets and the sun sets in tangerine hues. The sunrise side (east) has the backpacker vibe; the sunset side (west) is quieter. Most guesthouses have free hammocks and river-facing decks. Pair with a cold Beerlao (LAK 10,000 / ~$0.50) for peak relaxation.

You can live comfortably on $15-20/day. The sunset side (west) is slightly pricier but worth it for the views. ATMs exist only in Nakasang — bring cash in Kip, Baht, or USD.
The Mekong has powerful undercurrents, submerged rocks, and seasonal flooding that make swimming dangerous. Several tourists drown each year. Only tube in the designated gentle stretch between the islands. Never swim near the falls. Avoid the river after heavy rain when currents intensify and debris flows. If you're not a confident swimmer, wear a life jacket (available free from most guesthouses).
Don Det is a Lao village, not just a backpacker island. Cover shoulders and knees when walking through the village (swimwear at guesthouses only). Remove shoes before entering homes or temples. Loud partying after 10PM is frowned upon. The drug scene exists but penalties are severe — Lao drug laws carry sentences of life imprisonment or death.
