Hampi is a UNESCO site — don't climb on fragile structures, don't carve names, don't remove stones. Security guards patrol major monuments. The musical pillars at Vittala Temple are now off-limits for tapping (they've been damaged). Dress modestly at Virupaksha Temple (active worship site). Photography is free at most ruins but banned in some temple interiors.
No ATM in Hampi village — withdraw cash in Hospet (SBI, ICICI ATMs near bus stand). Limited mobile network coverage between ruins. Carry a physical map from your guesthouse. Don't swim in the Tungabhadra — strong currents and crocodiles reported upstream. Monkeys are bold near Virupaksha — secure your belongings. Stay hydrated — heat exhaustion is common.
Travel GuidesBoth were capitals of mighty empires. Both fell catastrophically. But visiting Hampi and Angkor Wat are wildly different experiences — and one costs a fraction of the other.
