Huacachina is one of Peru's cheapest spots. Hostel dorms: 25-40 PEN ($7-11). Private rooms: 60-120 PEN ($17-33). Full dinner at a lagoon restaurant: 25-40 PEN ($7-11). The main buggy/sandboarding tour is 50-80 PEN ($14-22). You can do everything in Huacachina for under $50/day comfortably. ATMs are in Ica — bring cash to Huacachina.
Desert sun is brutal — SPF 50+, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. Bring a bandana or buff to cover your face during buggy rides (sand gets everywhere). Keep cameras and phones in sealed bags during dune activities. Drink at least 3 liters of water daily. Nights cool down significantly — bring a light jacket for evening dune hikes.
Not all buggy operators maintain their vehicles equally. Ask your hostel for a recommendation and check that your buggy has seatbelts and a roll cage. The drivers are skilled but the rides are aggressive — hold on tight. If you have back problems, the standing sandboarding position is less jarring than lying down. Insurance is not typically included.
The village is tiny — arrive by early afternoon, do the sunset buggy tour, enjoy the backpacker nightlife, catch sunrise on the dunes, and move on by noon. Use Huacachina as a base for day trips to Nazca Lines, Ballestas Islands/Paracas, and Ica wineries. Most travelers spend 1-2 nights total. The party scene is fun but small.
US, Canadian, EU, and most passport holders enter Peru visa-free for 183 days. You'll receive an entry stamp at the airport or border — keep track of your allowed days. Peru has no departure tax at airports (included in ticket). Yellow fever vaccination is recommended if continuing to the Amazon but not required for the coast.
TipsThe desert oasis is Peru's wildest backpacker stop — but the sand gets everywhere, the buggy rides are intense, and the ATMs are in Ica. Here's everything I learned the hard way.
