The Intha people's unique one-legged rowing technique — standing on the stern, wrapping one leg around the oar — is Inle's iconic image. Originally developed to keep hands free for fishing nets. Best seen at dawn when fishermen are actually working (not posing for tourists). Hire a long-tail boat for the day: MMK 25,000-35,000 (~$12-17) for the whole boat.
Ingenious hydroponic agriculture: the Intha create floating garden beds from lake weed and hyacinth, anchored by bamboo poles. Tomatoes, flowers, beans, and cucumbers grow on the water. The gardens stretch for kilometers through the southern part of the lake. Visible on any boat tour. The morning market at Ywama village sells the harvest.
The village of Inpawkhon is famous for silk weaving on traditional looms and — uniquely — fabric woven from lotus flower stems. Lotus silk is incredibly labor-intensive (a single scarf takes 2 months) and costs $150-300. Workshops are free to visit and watch artisans work. Lotus silk longyi (sarongs) and scarves make exceptional souvenirs.
Inle's most sacred temple, housing five small Buddha images so thickly coated in gold leaf by devotees that they are now unrecognizable spheres. During the October festival, four images are paraded around the lake on a royal barge — one of Myanmar's grandest ceremonies. Free entry. Open 6AM-6PM. Located on the lake, accessible only by boat.
Entire communities live in wooden houses built on stilts over the water — schools, monasteries, shops, and homes connected by wooden walkways. Nampan and Ywama are the most visited. The silversmith workshops in Ywama and cheroot (cigar) rolling demonstrations are interesting stops. Bring small bills for purchases — there is no ATM on the lake.
A forest of 2,478 ancient stupas an hour's drive from the lake in Pa-O territory. Many stupas date to the 12th century, with intricate stucco carvings. A Pa-O guide is mandatory ($10, arranged at the entrance). Combined with the scenic drive through Shan hill country, this makes a memorable half-day excursion from Nyaungshwe. Entry: $3.

Credit cards are accepted at a few upscale hotels only. Budget $20-40/day for a comfortable stay including boat trips, meals, and entrance fees.
At 880m elevation, dawn boat rides are cold — temperatures drop to 10°C in December-January. Bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves for early morning trips. The sun warms up quickly by 9AM. Boats have no shelter from wind or spray. Waterproof your camera gear in a dry bag during the rainy season.
