Resort areas (Montego Bay Hip Strip, Negril, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio) are generally safe. Avoid downtown Kingston at night, Flankers and Canterbury in Montego Bay, and Spanish Town. Use reputable taxi services — JUTA and JCAL are licensed tourist taxis with red plates. Do not walk alone at night outside resort areas.
Despite Jamaica's reputation, marijuana is decriminalized (not legalized) for small amounts (2 oz or less) — a petty offense with a $5 USD fine. It is still illegal. Tourist 'ganja tours' exist but are in a legal gray area. Stronger enforcement near airports and cruise ports. Never attempt to leave the country with any.

Tipping is expected and important for service workers who depend on it. Restaurants: 10-15% if no service charge included. Hotel housekeeping: $2-3 USD/day. Tour guides: $5-10 USD. All-inclusive staff: $1-2 USD for good service. Have small USD bills ready.
Vendors at craft markets, beaches, and tourist areas will persistently offer goods and services. A firm but friendly 'No thank you, respect' works better than ignoring them. Haggle at craft markets — first price is usually 2-3x the expected sale price. Agree on taxi fares before getting in.
StoriesJamaica didn't ease me in. It hit me with jerk smoke at the airport, bioluminescence at midnight, and a waterfall that tried to knock me off my feet.
