Historical Significance
Source of the White Nile identified here by John Hanning Speke in 1862
The point where the White Nile exits Lake Victoria, beginning its 6,650km journey to the Mediterranean. A boat ride to the source marker (erected where Speke stood in 1862) costs UGX 20,000-30,000 (~$5-8) from Speke Monument or nearby docks. The water is surprisingly calm here before the rapids downstream. A Mahatma Gandhi memorial sits nearby — his ashes were scattered at this spot. Allow 1-2 hours.
Among the world's best rafting experiences — Class III to V rapids over a 30km stretch with names like Bujagali, Silverback, and The Bad Place. Full-day trips: $125-150/person with Nile River Explorers or Adrift. Includes lunch, photos/video, and transport from Kampala or Jinja. No experience needed — safety kayakers accompany every raft. The calm stretches between rapids allow swimming in the warm Nile water.
A 44m bungee jump from a platform over the Nile, operated by Adrift at their riverside base. $115/person. Open daily 10AM-5PM. Professional New Zealand-style setup with an impeccable safety record. You plunge toward the river and bounce back over the rapids — the most scenic bungee setting in Africa. Minimum age 14, minimum weight 35kg. Free spectating and photo package included.
While the original Bujagali Falls were submerged by the Bujagali hydroelectric dam in 2012, the area downstream remains the hub for adventure activities — kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, tubing, and horseback riding along the riverbank. Kayaking courses: $40-60/half-day. The sunset riverbank bars and backpacker lodges (Nile River Camp, The Haven) make this a social hub for travelers.
A compact colonial-era town with faded Indian trading-quarter architecture (the Madhvani family built a sugar empire here). Walk Main Street for local shops, the central market for fresh produce, and the old railway station. Try the local street food — rolex (chapati-omelette wrap, UGX 2,000/~$0.50) and grilled tilapia from Lake Victoria (UGX 10,000/~$2.70). The town is walkable in 2 hours.
A 300 sq km tropical rainforest between Kampala and Jinja, home to 315 bird species, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and red-tailed monkeys. Entry: UGX 35,000 (~$10). Guided nature walks from 1-5 hours on marked trails. The canopy walkway offers treetop views. A popular day-trip stop en route from Kampala. Steel-cable zip-lining through the canopy: UGX 80,000 (~$22). Best visited early morning for birdwatching.

Nile River Explorers and Adrift Uganda have decades of experience and international safety certifications. Listen to safety briefings carefully. Wear the provided life jackets and helmets. The Nile here has bilharzia (schistosomiasis) — avoid prolonged skin contact with still water near the banks. The rapids themselves are generally safe due to the fast-flowing current. Bring waterproof sunscreen.
Jinja is in a malaria zone — take prophylaxis and use DEET repellent, especially at dusk near the river. Drink only bottled or filtered water. The nearest hospital with international-standard care is in Kampala (2 hours). Adventure operators carry first-aid kits. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is essential — standard plans cost $5-10/day and cover adventure sports.
Riverside hostels like The Haven and Nile River Camp offer dorm beds from UGX 30,000/night (~$8) and private rooms from UGX 80,000 (~$22). Meals at local restaurants: UGX 5,000-15,000 (~$1.50-4). Rafting at $125-150 is the big expense but it's world-class value. Multi-activity combos (raft + bungee + kayak) offer 10-15% discounts. Bring cash — most places don't accept cards.
The Uganda e-visa covers your entire stay ($50 single entry, $100 multiple entry). Apply at visas.immigration.go.ug. If combining with Kenya or Rwanda, the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) is better value. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for Uganda entry. Keep your vaccination card with your passport at all times.
The source of the Nile holds deep spiritual importance for the Busoga people. You'll encounter traditional healers and spirit mediums near the source area — they may offer blessings or rituals for a small donation (UGX 5,000-10,000 is appropriate). Be respectful, ask before photographing. The submerged Bujagali Falls were a major spiritual site before the dam — a sensitive topic for some locals.
