Most nationalities need a visa to enter Uganda. Apply for an e-visa at visas.immigration.go.ug ($50 single entry, $100 multiple entry). Processing takes 2-5 business days. East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for 90 days — excellent value if visiting multiple countries. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry.
Random boda-boda rides can be risky — overcharging, reckless driving, and occasional theft. The SafeBoda app (Uganda's version of Uber for motorbikes) provides vetted drivers, fixed pricing, helmets, and GPS tracking. Download before arrival. For longer distances, use Uber or Bolt (car service). Avoid walking in unfamiliar areas after dark. Keep valuables hidden on boda rides.
Uganda is a malaria zone — take prophylaxis (Malarone or doxycycline) starting before arrival. Use DEET repellent and sleep under treated mosquito nets. Tap water is not safe to drink — stick to bottled or filtered water. Ensure routine vaccines are current; hepatitis A, typhoid, and yellow fever vaccines are strongly recommended. Carry a basic first-aid kit for travel outside Kampala.
The drive from Entebbe airport to Kampala (40km) can take 1-4 hours depending on traffic. Rush hours (7-10AM, 4-8PM) are gridlocked. Plan airport transfers for off-peak times. Within Kampala, boda-bodas are fastest but cars are safer. For gorilla trekking, fly to Bwindi (1 hour) rather than drive (8-10 hours of rough roads). Book domestic flights with Aerolink Uganda.
Budget accommodation from UGX 50,000/night (~$13), local meals UGX 5,000-15,000 (~$1.50-4), and boda rides UGX 3,000-10,000 (~$1-3). The major expense is the $800 gorilla permit — non-negotiable and worth every cent. Mid-range hotels in Kampala run $40-80/night. The Ugandan Rolex (chapati wrapped around eggs, not the watch) is the best $0.50 street food in East Africa.
ATMs dispense large notes (UGX 50,000) but street vendors and boda drivers rarely have change. Break bills at supermarkets or hotels. Bargaining is expected at markets, for taxis, and at craft stalls — not in restaurants or supermarkets. USD is widely accepted for hotels and tours but get UGX for daily expenses. Mobile money (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money) is widely used by locals.

StoriesI came for the gorillas. I stayed for the rolex wraps, the view from the mosque, and a boda-boda driver named Moses who drove like the road was optional.
