Board your houseboat (kettuvallam)(30 minutes)

Same Indian e-Visa rules — apply online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Both Cochin (COK) and Trivandrum (TRV) airports accept e-Visa arrivals. Kerala is well set up for international tourism with English widely spoken even in rural areas.
Hire a car with driver for 2,500-3,500 INR/day (~$30-42) — the most comfortable way to cover Kerala's spread-out attractions. Train connections are excellent between Kochi, Alleppey, Varkala, and Trivandrum (book on irctc.co.in). KSRTC government buses connect all major towns cheaply (50-200 INR for most routes).
Kerala's homestay network is India's best. Families open their homes to guests for 1,500-4,000 INR/night (~$18-48) including home-cooked Kerala meals (which alone are worth it). Search on Airbnb or Kerala Tourism's official site. The food at a good homestay — appam with stew, fish moilee, avial — beats any restaurant.
Book houseboats directly with Kerala Tourism-certified operators (look for the green classification sticker). Touts at Alleppey bus stand quote inflated prices. A legitimate 1-bedroom AC houseboat costs 6,000-8,000 INR overnight. Ask to see the boat before paying. Insist on Kerala Tourism certification — uncertified boats may lack safety equipment and dump waste into backwaters.
Kerala society is more conservative than Goa. Beachwear is fine at tourist beaches but not in towns or temples. Cover up when visiting temples — many require white/modest clothing. Remove shoes at all temples. Some temples (like Padmanabhaswamy in Trivandrum) restrict entry to Hindus only.
Kerala's monsoon (June-September) brings heavy rainfall and occasional floods (devastating in 2018 and 2019). Roads to hill stations like Munnar can have landslides. Check weather forecasts daily. That said, monsoon is the traditional Ayurveda season and everything is spectacularly green. Carry waterproof bags for electronics.
Anand runs a homestay in Alleppey and has strong opinions about houseboat scams, monsoon travel, and why you should eat porotta with beef fry at least once.
From Fort Kochi's Chinese fishing nets to Munnar's tea hills, everything you need to plan your Kerala trip.
The birthplace of Ayurveda, overnight houseboat journeys through palm-fringed canals, and why Kerala's approach to wellness puts Western spas to shame.
