Shows at 6:30PM (Hindi) and 7:30PM (English) in winter, shifted 30 minutes later in summer. Tickets: 250 INR (Indians), 700 INR (foreigners). Seating is on stone steps — bring a cushion. Best after monsoon (August-November) when water flow is highest. The Ken Gharial Sanctuary nearby protects the critically endangered gharial crocodile — boat rides sometimes available. Combine with a Panna visit as a day trip. The volcanic rock formations are 350 million years old. Allow 1-2 hours.

Standard Indian e-tourist visa applies. Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Khajuraho Airport (HJR) handles domestic flights only — international visitors fly into Delhi (DEL) or Varanasi (VNS) and connect. The Delhi-Khajuraho flight is about 1 hour.
Fastest route: Direct flights from Delhi and Varanasi to Khajuraho (HJR). Budget option: Train to Mahoba station (75km away, well-connected to Delhi, Jhansi, and Varanasi) then taxi (1,200-1,500 INR, 1.5 hours). Within Khajuraho, everything is walkable or by auto-rickshaw (30-100 INR). For Panna National Park, hire a taxi (1,500-2,000 INR round trip). Khajuraho is often visited as part of a circuit: Varanasi (1-hour flight or overnight train via Satna) → Khajuraho (2 days) → Orchha (175km, 4 hours by road, stunning Bundela-era palaces and cenotaphs with zero crowds) → Jhansi (18km from Orchha, major railway junction for Delhi/Agra/Mumbai). This circuit covers some of India's most spectacular and least-visited heritage in a week.
Budget hotels: 500-1,500 INR/night. Mid-range heritage hotels: 2,000-5,000 INR. Meals at local restaurants: 100-300 INR. Temple entry (Western Group combo): 40/600 INR (Indian/foreign). Guide: 500-1,000 INR. Budget 1,500-3,000 INR/day. The town is small enough that you don't need transport for the main temples. Bargain for auto-rickshaw fares — they inflate prices for tourists.
Self-appointed guides will approach you aggressively at the temple entrance claiming to be ASI-certified. Only hire guides at the official counter inside the Western Group complex. Touts also offer 'special viewing' of hidden erotic carvings — everything is visible on a regular visit. The same applies to shops selling 'antique' sculptures — they are mass-produced replicas. Photography is allowed at all temples but no flash inside shrines.
From March to June, temperatures exceed 45°C. Even in October, midday is scorching. Visit temples at sunrise (6-8AM) or late afternoon (4-6PM). Carry 2+ liters of water. The Western Group has zero shade inside the complex. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are essential. The Sound and Light Show in the evening is the perfect end-of-day activity when it's finally cool.
StoriesI came for the erotic carvings. I stayed because a sound-and-light show narrated by Amitabh Bachchan made me cry about a dynasty I'd never heard of.
