Same visa rules as the rest of Italy. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Indian citizens need a Schengen visa via VFS Global (~80 EUR, 2-4 weeks processing). Apply through the Italian consulate if Lake Como is your primary destination.
The biggest mistake tourists make: renting a car. Lakeside roads are narrow, traffic is heavy in summer, and parking is scarce and expensive (2-4 EUR/hour). Take the train to Como or Varenna from Milan (1 hour, ~8 EUR), then use the ferry system to village hop. Ferries run frequently April-October. Buy tickets at docks or on the navigazionelaghi.it app.
Bellagio hotels average 200-400 EUR/night in summer. Varenna and Menaggio offer equal charm at 100-200 EUR/night. Better yet, stay in Como town (80-150 EUR/night) with easy train access to Milan and ferries to everywhere. Book 3-4 months ahead for June-September — late availability is nearly impossible at popular spots.
Many lakeside bars offer aperitivo (6-10 EUR for a spritz or Negroni with complimentary snacks) from 6-8PM. Combined with a lunchtime primo piatto at a trattoria (10-14 EUR for pasta), you can eat well for 25-35 EUR per day. Skip waterfront restaurants in Bellagio's main square — walk one street back for 30% lower prices and better food.
Most villa gardens (Balbianello, Monastero, Melzi, Carlotta) close November through February or March. Ferry schedules are also heavily reduced in winter. The lake is most vibrant from April (wisteria blooming) through October. Late April to mid-June offers the best combination of flowers, mild weather, and pre-summer prices.
Swimming in Lake Como is allowed and popular, but the water is deep (up to 410m), cold even in summer (22-24°C at the surface), and there can be boat traffic. Stick to designated swimming areas like Lido di Bellagio, Lido di Lenno, or the beaches at Varenna. Never swim across ferry routes. Sudden afternoon thunderstorms can occur June-August.
