Cheapest: Piccadilly Line (Tube) takes 50-60 min for ~£5.50. Fastest: Heathrow Express to Paddington is 15 min but costs £25 (book online for £5.50 off-peak). Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) is the best value at ~£11 and 30-40 min to central stations.
Most major museums are free: British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Tate Modern, National Gallery, V&A, Imperial War Museum. Special exhibitions are paid (£15-25). This makes London surprisingly affordable for culture lovers.
Skip sit-down restaurants and eat at markets for half the price. Borough Market (SE1), Camden Market, Brick Lane, and Maltby Street Market all offer incredible street food for £5-12 per dish. Supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's have great £3-5 meal deals for lunch.
Tipping is not expected like in the US — 10-12.5% at restaurants is standard (check if service charge is already included). At pubs, you order at the bar and pay immediately — there is no table service for drinks. Never tip at a bar.
The London Underground is generally safe but pickpockets target tourists on crowded lines (Central, Victoria, Piccadilly). Keep bags zipped and in front of you. Avoid the last Tube (around midnight) from Leicester Square on weekends when it gets very crowded.
