Two ancient cave dwelling districts — Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso — where homes, churches, and cisterns are carved directly into the limestone gorge. Inhabited since the Paleolithic era and evacuated in 1952 as slums, now restored into boutique hotels, restaurants, and museums. Walking the Sassi is free. Wear sturdy shoes — the stone lanes are steep, uneven, and slippery when wet. Allow a full day to explore both quarters.
A preserved cave dwelling showing how Materani families lived until the 1950s — entire families, their animals, and a mule shared a single carved room. Entry: 5 EUR. Open 9:30AM-7PM (summer), 9:30AM-5PM (winter). Located in Sasso Caveoso. The guided explanation (available in English) brings the poverty and ingenuity of cave life to vivid reality. Allow 45 minutes.
Over 150 rock-hewn churches dating from the 8th-13th century are scattered across the Sassi and surrounding ravine parkland. Key visits: Santa Maria de Idris (3 EUR, frescoes inside a rocky spur), San Pietro Barisano (3 EUR, largest rupestrian church), and the Crypt of Original Sin (10 EUR, 9th-century frescoes called the 'Sistine Chapel of cave art' — book ahead). Allow half a day for the main cluster.
The best panoramic view of the entire Sassi — from across the Gravina canyon on the Murgia plateau. Free access. Drive or walk across the Tibetan-style pedestrian bridge. At sunset, the cave city glows golden. This is the viewpoint used in the James Bond film No Time to Die (2021) and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004). Allow 1-2 hours including the walk.
A hidden gem food experience — Matera's durum wheat bread has IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status and is baked in wood-fired ovens in huge 1-2 kg loaves that stay fresh for a week. Visit Panificio Perrone or Forno Antico Comunale to watch traditional baking. Buy a loaf (2-3 EUR) and pair with local olive oil and dried peppers (peperoni cruschi) for a perfect snack.

Matera has no train station on the main Italian rail network. Options: fly to Bari (BRI), then take the FAL Ferrovie Appulo Lucane train (1.5h, 5 EUR, runs every 1-2 hours from Bari Centrale) or Pugliairbus shuttle (70 min, 5 EUR). Driving from Bari: 1 hour on SS96/SS99. From Naples: 3 hours. Within Matera, the Sassi are pedestrian-only — park in Piazza Matteotti or Via Lucana garages (1-2 EUR/hour).
Matera's cave hotels (alberghi diffusi) are a once-in-a-lifetime experience — ancient cave dwellings converted into atmospheric rooms with modern amenities. Matera is affordable by Italian standards. Restaurant mains: 10-16 EUR (try orecchiette with cime di rapa, lamb stew with cardoncelli mushrooms). A glass of local Aglianico wine: 3-5 EUR. Pizza: 6-10 EUR. For the best value, eat at trattorias away from the main Piazza del Sedile — Trattoria Lucana and Oi Mari offer excellent local food at local prices.
The biggest mistake tourists make: wearing sandals or fashion shoes in the Sassi. The ancient stone lanes are steep, uneven, and become dangerously slippery when wet. Hundreds of steps connect levels. Wear proper walking shoes with grip. After rain, some paths become watercourses. In summer, carry water — the stone radiates heat and there are few shaded sections.
In 1952, Carlo Levi's book 'Christ Stopped at Eboli' exposed Matera's cave poverty — 15,000 people living with animals in disease-ridden grottoes. The government forcibly relocated residents to new housing. The abandoned Sassi decayed until the 1993 UNESCO listing sparked restoration. Today's beauty was built on real suffering. The Casa Grotta museum tells this story respectfully.
Travel GuidesCave city or trullo village? Both are UNESCO sites, both are within two hours of Bari, and both photograph beautifully. But the experiences are quite different.
StoriesI slept in a cave. Ate bread that weighs a kilo. And walked until my shoes begged for mercy on the ancient stone lanes.
StoriesIn 1952, they evacuated it as a slum. In 1993, UNESCO called it a treasure. In 2019, it was European Capital of Culture. Matera's arc is unlike any city on Earth.
