Public transit is minimal. Rental cars are essential and can sell out on Maui — book 2-4 weeks ahead. Expect $80-150/day in peak season. Turo is often cheaper than traditional agencies. A Jeep or 4WD is helpful for Haleakala and unpaved beach access roads. Drive times are deceptive — Kahului to Ka'anapali is only 40km but takes 45min.
Reservations for sunrise viewing (3AM-7AM) at Haleakala must be booked on recreation.gov up to 60 days in advance and sell out within hours. Cost: $1 reservation + $30 park entry. Cancellations appear 2 days before — check at 7AM HST. Without a reservation, you can visit after 7AM for equally stunning daytime views.
Do not stack rocks (it disrupts native habitats and is culturally disrespectful), stay on marked trails, and never remove lava rocks (considered bad luck, and the national park receives packages of returned rocks daily). Say 'mahalo' (thank you) and learn a few Hawaiian words — locals genuinely appreciate it.
Hawaiian beaches can go from calm to dangerous within hours. Always check surf reports on Surfline before swimming. Never turn your back on the ocean — rogue waves kill tourists every year. Swim at lifeguarded beaches (Big Beach, Ka'anapali, Kamaole). Reef shoes are essential for rocky entries.
UV at tropical latitude is intense, even on cloudy days. Use reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen (non-reef-safe sunscreen is banned in Hawaii). Reapply every 90 minutes when in water. Wear rash guards for snorkeling — they're more effective than sunscreen. Bring aloe vera gel because you'll probably still burn.
Everything is shipped in. Save money: shop at Costco Kahului (near the airport) on arrival for snacks and drinks, eat plate lunches at local spots like Tin Roof ($12-15, run by Top Chef's Sheldon Simeon), and buy poke by the pound at Foodland or Tamura's ($15-20/lb) instead of restaurant poke bowls.
Hawaii is a US state — domestic travelers need only a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state ID. International visitors need the same visa/ESTA as any US mainland entry. There's an agricultural inspection when leaving — you cannot take certain fruits, plants, or soil.
