Standard Indian e-Tourist Visa is sufficient for Meghalaya — unlike Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, or Mizoram, no Inner Line Permit or Restricted Area Permit is required for foreign nationals. However, carry your passport at all times near the Bangladesh border areas (Dawki).
Guwahati Airport (GAU) is the main gateway with flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. From Guwahati, shared taxis to Shillong take 2.5-3 hours (300-400 INR per seat, 2,500 INR for full car). MSRTC buses are cheaper (150-250 INR) but slower. The road is good but winding. The most efficient way to cover the top sites is a 2-3 day car circuit from Shillong: Day 1 — Cherrapunji (waterfalls, caves, root bridges); Day 2 — Mawlynnong + Dawki; Day 3 — Laitlum + Shillong. A car with driver costs 2,500-3,500 INR/day. Roads are narrow and winding — only experienced local drivers should navigate them.
Meghalaya receives some of the highest rainfall on Earth. Even in the 'dry' season (Nov-Feb), sudden showers are common. Pack a quality rain jacket, waterproof bag covers, and quick-dry clothing. For the Nongriat trek, waterproof trekking shoes are essential — the stone steps become treacherous when wet.
Budget hotels in Shillong: 800-1,500 INR/night. Meals: 100-250 INR. Village homestays: 300-1,000 INR/night. Shared taxi for a full day circuit: 500-800 INR per head. ATMs are available in Shillong and Cherrapunji but scarce elsewhere — withdraw enough cash in Shillong. UPI works at some Shillong shops but not in villages.
Meghalaya's Khasi and Garo tribes follow matrilineal succession. Women head households and own property. This doesn't mean it's a matriarchy — but the gender dynamics differ from mainland India. Ask permission before photographing sacred forests (law kyntang) or ritual sites. Betel nut (kwai) offered as a greeting is a sign of respect — accepting it is polite.
Travel GuidesLiving root bridges, transparent rivers, caves that swallow you whole, and the wettest spot on Earth. Meghalaya is northeast India's best-kept secret.
