The essential Milford experience — a 2-hour cruise past Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls, Bowen Falls, and seal colonies. Operators include Real Journeys and Jucy Cruise, from NZD 70-95 adults. Boats sail close enough to waterfalls to feel the spray. Best on rainy days when temporary waterfalls multiply to hundreds.
The iconic 1,692m peak rising directly from sea level — one of the most photographed mountains in New Zealand. Best viewed from the cruise or from the foreshore. The full climb is a serious alpine expedition (not for tourists), but the view from the water is unforgettable.
Paddle at water level beneath towering granite cliffs and waterfalls. Rosco's Milford Kayaks runs guided tours from NZD 119 (3 hrs) including gear and instruction. No experience needed. Watch for bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and Fiordland crested penguins at close range.
One of New Zealand's Great Walks — a 53.5km, 4-day trek through rainforest, alpine passes, and valleys ending at Milford Sound. DOC hut bookings (NZD 70/night) open in June and sell out within days for the Oct-Apr season. Guided walks from ~NZD 2,200 all-inclusive.
The 120km drive from Te Anau to Milford is one of the world's great road trips — past Mirror Lakes, The Chasm, monkey puzzle trees, and through the Homer Tunnel (1.2km single lane). Allow 2.5 hours each way including photo stops. Free, but check road status at milfordroad.co.nz.
Descend 10m below the fiord's surface at Harrison Cove to view black coral, sea anemones, and fish through underwater windows. Unique because a freshwater layer on top filters light, replicating deep-sea conditions at shallow depth. NZD 20 with cruise add-on. Allow 30 minutes.
Stay on the fiord after day-trippers leave for a sunset, stargazing, and dawn experience on a small expedition vessel. Real Journeys Overnight Cruise from NZD 399. Includes kayaking, tender boat rides to waterfalls, dinner, and breakfast. The fiord at dawn with no other boats is extraordinary.

Drive Milford to Queenstown(4 hours)
Via Te Anau. Or book a scenic flight from Milford to Queenstown (NZD 350, 35 min) to skip the drive and see the fiords from the air
US, UK, EU, and many other passport holders need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) — NZD 17 via app or NZD 23 online, plus an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100. Apply at least 72 hours before departure.
The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound is 4 hours each way via Te Anau. Most day tours depart Queenstown at 6-7AM and return 7-8PM. Alternatively, stay overnight in Te Anau (1.5hrs from Milford) to break the journey and enjoy the Milford Road at your own pace.
Milford Road (SH94) closes frequently in winter (Jun-Sep) due to avalanche risk, sometimes for days. There is no alternative road. Check milfordroad.co.nz before departing. Scenic flights from Queenstown (from NZD 350) bypass the road entirely.
Milford Sound gets rain 182 days a year, and rainy days create hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascading down the cliffs — it's arguably more spectacular in the rain. Bring waterproof layers regardless of the forecast. Cruises run in all weather.
Milford Sound is infamous for sandflies, especially near the shore and in still conditions. Apply strong insect repellent (DEET-based) before leaving the car. Once on the boat, the breeze keeps them away. Long sleeves and pants help on shore walks.
Book directly with cruise operators (Real Journeys, Jucy Cruise, Go Orange) rather than through Queenstown tour desks, which add commissions. Midday sailings are cheapest; early morning and late afternoon offer better light and fewer boats.
There is no petrol station, supermarket, or ATM at Milford Sound — just the cruise terminal and a small cafe. Fill up in Te Anau (last fuel stop). Bring lunch, snacks, and water. Phone reception is extremely limited (no cell towers in the fiord).
