National Parks
Gateway to both Arches NP (5 miles north) and Canyonlands NP (32 miles west) — two parks, one trip
Utah's most iconic landmark — a freestanding 52-foot sandstone arch framing the La Sal Mountains. The trail to the base is 3 miles round trip (1.5-2 hours, moderate with 480 ft elevation gain over slickrock). Entry: $30/vehicle for Arches NP. Sunset is magical but the hike back is in darkness — bring a headlamp.
Over 2,000 natural stone arches — the densest concentration on Earth. Key stops: Landscape Arch (306 ft, the longest), Double Arch, Windows Section, and Park Avenue. Entry: $30/vehicle, valid 7 days. Timed entry reservation required April-October ($2). The scenic drive alone takes 2-3 hours with stops.
A vast mesa rising 1,000 feet above the canyons with sweeping views at Grand View Point and Mesa Arch (famous sunrise icon). Entry: $30/vehicle. The Island in the Sky district is 32 miles from Moab. Grand View Point trail (2 miles round trip, easy) overlooks a landscape as grand as the Grand Canyon. Allow half a day.
A state park viewpoint 2,000 feet above the Colorado River's gooseneck bend — the view used in the final scene of 'Thelma & Louise.' Entry: $20/vehicle. Less crowded than the national parks. The 1.5-mile rim trail is easy and the overlook is arguably the most dramatic single view in Utah. Best at sunset.
The world's most famous mountain bike trail — a 10.5-mile loop over undulating Navajo sandstone. Free (BLM land). Difficulty: advanced. The rock provides extraordinary traction but the exposure and drops are serious. The 2.3-mile practice loop tests your comfort first. Bring 3+ liters of water. Allow 3-5 hours.
Hidden gem for non-hikers: half-day float trips on calm water through red rock canyon walls start at ~$60/person. Full-day Cataract Rapids trips (~$180) offer Class III-IV whitewater. Companies like Sheri Griffith and OARS operate from Moab. Best March-October. Book 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season.
Fly into Grand Junction or drive from Salt Lake City, and settle into Moab, the adventure basecamp for Utah's red rock country.
Arrive and drive to Moab(3 hours)

Easy loop trail (1 mile) past Double Arch, North and South Window, and Turret Arch. The morning light through the arches is spectacular. Parking fills by 10AM
Landscape Arch viewpoint(1 hour)
The longest arch in North America (306 ft). Easy 1.6-mile walk in the Devils Garden area. The arch is paper-thin — a slab fell off in 1991 and it will eventually collapse. See it while you can
Lunch packed(30 minutes)
No food services in Arches. Pack lunch and water from Moab. Shade is nonexistent
Delicate Arch at sunset(3 hours)
Utah's most iconic landmark — a freestanding 52-foot arch framing the La Sal Mountains. 3-mile round trip hike (1.5-2 hours, moderate, 480 ft gain over slickrock). Start 2 hours before sunset for the best light. The hike back is in darkness — bring a headlamp. Carry 2+ liters water
A vast mesa rising 1,000 feet above carved canyons — views as grand as the Grand Canyon but with a fraction of the crowds.
Drive to Island in the Sky(45 minutes)
32 miles from Moab via Hwy 313. $30/vehicle (or America the Beautiful Pass). The mesa top is a different world — 6,000 feet above sea level, cool mornings even in summer
Mesa Arch at sunrise(1 hour)
The most photographed sunrise in Utah — a stone arch framing Canyonlands' canyon at dawn. Short 0.5-mile loop. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. The arch glows red-orange from reflected light below. Popular — expect company at the viewpoint
Grand View Point(1 hour)
2-mile round trip easy trail to the most expansive viewpoint in the park. Look over a landscape carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers — as grand as the Grand Canyon but accessible and uncrowded. Allow time to absorb the scale

Dead Horse Point State Park(2.5 hours)
$20/vehicle. 2,000 feet above the Colorado River's gooseneck bend — the view from the final scene of Thelma and Louise. The 1.5-mile rim trail is easy and the overlook is arguably Utah's most dramatic single view. Best at sunset
Sunset at Dead Horse Point(1 hour)
Watch the canyon fill with shadow while the river glows. Bring a jacket — the rim is windy at sunset. One of those views you remember for life
Get on the water — half-day rafting through red rock canyons on the Colorado River.
Morning Colorado River rafting(4 hours)
Half-day calm float through red canyon walls ($60/person) or full-day Fisher Towers scenic section ($100-120). Companies: Sheri Griffith, OARS, Adrift Adventures. Book 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season. All equipment provided. A completely different perspective on the landscape
Lunch at Desert Bistro(1.5 hours)
Moab's most acclaimed restaurant. Locally sourced dishes — duck breast ($32), trout ($28), creative vegetarian options. Dinner is better but lunch is available seasonally. Reservations recommended
Afternoon at Corona Arch(2 hours)
3-mile round trip hike (moderate) to a massive arch just outside Moab on the Potash Road. Less crowded than Arches NP and equally impressive. The final approach uses a cable and a short ladder section. Free (BLM land)
Evening in Moab(1 hour)
Drinks at Woody's Tavern on Main Street. Local brews, pool tables, and a genuine small-town bar vibe
Moab is the mountain biking capital of the world. Even beginners can enjoy the experience.

Drive to airport(2 hours)

US citizens need no visa. ESTA ($21) required for Visa Waiver Program countries. Indian citizens need a B1/B2 visa. Moab is in southeastern Utah. Most visitors fly into Salt Lake City (SLC, 235 miles) and road-trip south, or into Grand Junction, CO (GJT, 110 miles).
The desert is deceptively dangerous. Carry at least 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per person per day. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke are real risks, especially June-August when temperatures exceed 40°C. Start hikes before 8AM. There is no shade on most trails.
From April 1 to October 31, Arches NP requires a timed entry reservation ($2/vehicle) booked at recreation.gov. Reservations release monthly and sell out fast. Without one, you can only enter before 7AM or after 4PM. The $30 park entrance fee is separate. The America the Beautiful Pass ($80) covers both Arches and Canyonlands.
Moab has limited lodging — hotels, motels, and campgrounds book out weeks ahead for spring and fall weekends. Reserve early. The town has a good selection of restaurants and gear shops along Main Street. Stock up on groceries at City Market before heading into the parks.
Arches and Canyonlands are both accessible from Moab, making it exceptional value. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80) covers both plus all other national parks for a year. Dead Horse Point State Park ($20) is between them. Three world-class parks in 2-3 days, one basecamp.
Slot canyons and dry washes can flood with deadly force from storms miles away with no warning. Never hike in slot canyons if rain is forecast anywhere in the region. Check weather at weather.gov before entering narrow canyons. Flash floods have killed hikers even on clear days.
