Drive or bike up the winding road through pineapple fields (30 minutes from the coast). Best in morning light. Combine with a walk through the Lycee Agricole botanical trails nearby.

Typically included in lagoon tour packages (XPF 7,000-9,000 / ~$65-85 per person for a half-day tour including snorkeling). The sharks are wild but habituated — safe with a guide. Moorea Ocean Adventures and Top Dive are reputable operators.
Moorea produces some of the sweetest pineapples in the Pacific. Visit the Rotui Juice Factory in Opunohu Valley for free tastings of fresh pineapple and papaya juice. Full-day lagoon tours circle the island by boat, stopping at snorkeling spots with coral gardens, a motu (islet) picnic with grilled fish, and the shark/ray feeding. XPF 9,000-12,000 (~$85-115) per person. Albert Tours and Moorea Mahana Tours are highly rated. The coral gardens off Tiahura have the best visibility. Bring your own mask for a better fit.

French Polynesia follows French overseas territory visa rules. US, EU, UK, Canadian, Australian, and NZ citizens get 90 days visa-free. Other nationalities may need a Schengen-type visa — apply at the French consulate. Passport must be valid 3 months beyond your stay.
The Aremiti and Terevau ferries run Papeete to Moorea multiple times daily (30 minutes, XPF 1,500 / ~$14 one-way). You can bring a car (XPF 3,500). The ferry terminal is 5km from Faa'a Airport. On Moorea, rent a car (from XPF 6,000/day / ~$55) or scooter (XPF 3,500/day) — the 60km coast road circles the entire island in 2 hours.
Overwater bungalows here start at XPF 35,000/night (~$330) vs. XPF 80,000+ in Bora Bora. Guesthouses (pensions) run XPF 8,000-15,000 (~$75-140) with breakfast. Eat at roulottes (food trucks) at Moorea's small villages for XPF 1,000-1,500 (~$10-14) per meal. The Petit Village area near Cook's Bay has the most dining options.
Imported food in French Polynesia is very expensive — a simple restaurant meal can cost XPF 2,500-4,000 (~$23-38). Save by shopping at Champion supermarket near Cook's Bay. Local fruit (pamplemousse, pineapple, banana) at roadside stands is cheap and incredible. The Saturday morning market in Pao Pao has the freshest local produce.
While tourist spots speak English, locals appreciate effort in French (bonjour, merci) or Tahitian (ia orana for hello, mauru'uru for thank you). French Polynesia has a relaxed 'island time' culture — don't rush service staff. Sunday is family and church day — most local businesses close. Tipping is not expected but appreciated.
The coral reef is sharp and stonefish (venomous, camouflaged) live in shallow lagoon areas. Always wear reef shoes when wading. The blacktip sharks in the lagoon are not dangerous to humans but don't provoke them. Wear high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen — non-reef-safe products damage the coral that makes Moorea special.
Travel GuidesBora Bora gets the Instagram fame. Moorea gets everything else — better food, wilder mountains, real Polynesian culture, and a lagoon that's just as blue.
