US, UK, and EU citizens need a visa. Apply online at evisa.gov.mz (single entry, 30 days, ~$50). Processing takes 5 business days. Some nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Maputo airport ($50) but the e-visa avoids the queue. Passport must be valid for 6 months with 3 blank pages.
Overland travel on Mozambique's EN1 highway is slow and roads deteriorate heading north. LAM Mozambique Airlines flies Maputo-Vilankulo (~$150-250 one way), Maputo-Inhambane, and Maputo-Nampula (for Ilha de Mozambique). Book at lam.co.mz. For Tofo, fly to Inhambane then take a 30-minute chapa (local minibus) or taxi.
Peri-peri prawns, grilled crayfish, matapa (cassava leaf stew with peanut and coconut), and fresh fish are staples. A plate of peri-peri prawns at a local restaurant costs 500-1,000 MZN (~$8-15). Street-side barracas (shacks) serve meals for 100-300 MZN. Bring a high cash budget — many areas have no ATMs.
ATMs are rare outside Maputo, Inhambane, and Vilankulo. When you find one, withdraw the maximum. Carry plenty of small MZN notes — breaking a 1,000 MZN note at a local market is difficult. South African Rand and US Dollars are accepted at some lodges. Mobile money (M-Pesa) is growing but not yet universal for tourists.
The northernmost province of Cabo Delgado has experienced an insurgency since 2017 with ongoing security operations. All major governments advise against travel there. The rest of Mozambique is generally safe, though petty crime exists in Maputo. Avoid walking alone at night and don't display valuables.
Mozambique is a high-risk malaria zone year-round. Consult a travel doctor 4-6 weeks before departure for prophylaxis (Malarone or doxycycline). Bring DEET insect repellent and sleep under treated mosquito nets. Symptoms can appear up to 4 weeks after travel — seek immediate medical attention for any post-trip fever.
Mozambique is the only Portuguese-speaking country in East Africa. Even basic Portuguese phrases ('obrigado/a' for thank you, 'quanto custa' for how much) will earn warm smiles. English is spoken at tourist hotels but rarely by locals outside Maputo. A Portuguese phrasebook or translation app is essential.
