Gone are the days of casual drop-in tasting. Post-2020, nearly all Napa wineries require advance reservations — often 1-2 weeks ahead for popular spots, months ahead for cult wineries like Screaming Eagle or Harlan. Use apps like CellarPass or Tock to book. Walk-ins may work on weekday afternoons at smaller producers along the Silverado Trail.
DUI enforcement is strict in Napa County. After 3-4 winery tastings, you'll be well over the legal limit. Options: hire a private driver ($60-80/hour, 4-hour minimum), use Napa Valley Wine Trolley ($150/person, group tours), or bike the flat valley floor (Napa Valley Bike Tours from $45 rental/day). Uber/Lyft work but surge pricing is common on weekends.
Average tasting fees run $40-75/person, and a nice dinner is $100-200/person. Save money: visit Sonoma County next door (tastings $20-40, more casual), eat lunch at Oxbow Public Market instead of sit-down restaurants, stay in American Canyon or Vallejo (30 min south, hotels from $120 vs $350+ in Napa), and buy wine direct at the winery — often cheaper than retail.
Napa on a Saturday is packed — traffic on Highway 29 crawls, tasting rooms are shoulder-to-shoulder, and restaurants are fully booked. Visit Tuesday through Thursday for a completely different experience: shorter waits, more personal attention from winemakers, and easier parking. Many wineries offer weekday-only specials and library tastings.
August through October is wildfire season in Northern California. While fires rarely directly impact Napa Valley tourism, smoke from nearby fires can severely affect air quality and visibility. Check AirNow.gov before visiting. Most wineries stay open during smoke events but outdoor tastings may move indoors. Travel insurance covering trip interruption is wise for fall visits.
Non-US citizens need a valid visa or ESTA (Visa Waiver Program, $21, apply at least 72 hours before travel). If shipping wine home internationally, be aware of customs duties — most countries allow 1-2 bottles duty-free. Many wineries can arrange domestic shipping but not international.
Travel GuidesHot air balloons, a replica Tuscan castle, volcanic mud baths, a geyser, and the best food market in Northern California. Napa works even if you don't drink.

StoriesI tasted 47 wines in five days, nearly cried at a hot air balloon ride, and discovered that the $45 tasting was better than the $100 one. Here's what happened.
