Most nationalities can apply for a 90-day single-entry e-visa online at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn for $25. Processing takes 3 working days. Some nationalities (UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea) get 45 days visa-free. Always check current rules — Vietnam changes visa policies frequently.
Buses from Hanoi's Giap Bat bus station run every 30 minutes (2 hours, VND 70,000-100,000, ~$3-4). Private car/driver costs VND 1-1.5 million (~$40-60) one-way. Trains to Ninh Binh station take 2.5 hours (VND 80,000-150,000). Most travelers base in Tam Coc village (7km from Ninh Binh city) for proximity to attractions.
The best way to explore is by motorbike (VND 120,000-180,000/day, ~$5-7) or bicycle (VND 30,000-50,000/day). The area is flat and distances are short. Roads are quiet compared to Hanoi. Google Maps works well for navigation. Helmets are mandatory on motorbikes and most rental shops provide them.
Ninh Binh is one of Vietnam's best-value destinations. Homestays VND 200,000-400,000/night (~$8-16), local meals VND 30,000-80,000 (~$1.20-3.20), boat rides VND 150,000-250,000. A full day including boat ride, Mua Cave, cycling, and three meals costs under VND 500,000 (~$20) total.
Rowers at Tam Coc often expect tips of VND 50,000-100,000 and may aggressively sell embroidered goods mid-river. You're under no obligation to buy. A tip of VND 20,000-50,000 per person is reasonable. Trang An rowers are generally less pushy. Politely declining is fine — don't feel pressured.
Mua Cave's 500 steps are uneven, slippery when wet, and have minimal railings. Wear proper shoes (not flip-flops). Bich Dong Pagoda also involves climbing through caves. Carry water — there's little shade on the Mua Cave climb. Start early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat exhaustion.
SeasonalLate May transforms the paddies into gold. September clears the crowds. And the monsoon months? They have their own unexpected beauty.
StoriesA 28-year-old boat rower's daughter shares the best time for golden rice, where to cycle without tourists, and what the caves look like at sunrise.
TipsThe Tam Coc boat scam everyone falls for, why you should skip Mua Cave at noon, and where the locals actually eat. Ninh Binh done right.
