Buses from Skopje to Ohrid run every 1-2 hours (600-900 MKD / $11-16, 3 hours via highway). In summer, Wizz Air and seasonal charters fly to Ohrid Airport (OHD) from a few European cities. Within Ohrid, the old town and lakefront are walkable. Taxis within town: 100-200 MKD. Rent a car for day trips to St Naum or Bitola (from 1,500 MKD/day).
Ohrid is remarkably cheap. Restaurant meals: 200-500 MKD (3.50-9 EUR) for grilled trout or traditional tavche gravche. Beer: 80-120 MKD. Guesthouses: 1,500-3,000 MKD (25-50 EUR) per double room in the old town. A full day including food, sights, and a boat trip can cost under 30 EUR. The Ohrid Summer Festival (July-August) has free open-air concerts.
Ohrid trout (pastrmka) is the lake's endemic species and a local delicacy, but fishing is now heavily regulated due to endangerment. Most restaurants serve farmed trout, which is still excellent and fresh. A grilled trout dinner with salad runs 350-500 MKD. Pair with a local Tikves wine (T'ga za Jug red is the classic, ~150 MKD per glass).
Ohrid pearls are handcrafted from the scales of the local plasica fish, coated in multiple layers to create an iridescent finish. Genuine Ohrid pearls come from Talev family workshops (operating since 1924) on Car Samoil street. A basic strand starts around 1,000 MKD ($18). Fakes exist in the bazaar — buy from Talev or Fil-Dor for guaranteed authenticity.
The biggest mistake tourists make: not bringing water shoes. Rocky lake entries are common outside sandy beaches and sea urchins exist in spots. The lake is clean and safe for swimming. Lifeguards are rare — swim near others. The deep lake drops off steeply in places. Boats have right of way — stay close to shore in swimming areas.
