Taxi to Coimbatore or Nilgiri Mountain Railway(3 hours)
Taxi 1,500-2,500 INR. Or the toy train (book ahead) — the descent reveals different views than the ascent
Standard Indian e-tourist visa applies. Fly to Coimbatore (CJB) which has flights from major Indian cities and some international routes (Colombo, Singapore, Sharjah). From Coimbatore, the road to Ooty (88km) involves 36 famous hairpin bends — take motion sickness tablets if prone. The Nilgiri toy train from Mettupalayam (near Coimbatore) is the scenic alternative.
The Coimbatore-Ooty road via Coonoor has 36 hairpin bends — it is scenic but nauseating for some passengers. Start early (6-7AM) to avoid fog and traffic. The Mysore-Ooty road (125km, 3 hours) via Bandipur is flatter and equally scenic with possible wildlife sightings. Within Ooty, auto-rickshaws run 50-200 INR per trip. For day trips (Coonoor, Mudumalai), hire a taxi (1,500-2,500 INR/day). The toy train between Ooty and Coonoor is the most charming transport option.
The Mettupalayam-Ooty toy train (especially first class) sells out weeks in advance during April-June and December. Book at irctc.co.in exactly 120 days before travel. If the full route is sold out, the Coonoor-Ooty section is easier to get and still spectacular. The return journey (Ooty to Coonoor/Mettupalayam) descends the mountain and offers different views. Sit on the left side going up for the best valley views.
Budget hotels: 800-2,000 INR/night. Heritage bungalows (former British colonial houses): 3,000-8,000 INR. Meals at local restaurants: 100-300 INR. Ooty's homemade chocolates (sold everywhere): 200-500 INR per box. Budget 2,000-3,500 INR/day. Prices spike 50-100% during April-May and December holidays. Book accommodation at least 2-4 weeks ahead in peak season.
Many plains visitors underestimate Ooty's cold. Winter nights (December-February) drop to 2-5°C and budget hotels often lack heating. Pack warm layers, a good jacket, and thermals for winter visits. Even in summer, evenings are cool (10-15°C). Morning fog reduces visibility on roads — drive carefully. Monkeys at viewpoints and the botanical garden are aggressive about food — keep bags zipped and snacks hidden.
The Toda people are indigenous to the Nilgiris with a unique culture — barrel-vaulted huts, water buffalo worship, and distinctive embroidered shawls. Some villages welcome visitors (ask at the Botanical Garden tribal exhibit for guidance). Never photograph without permission. Buy authentic Toda embroidery directly from tribal cooperatives (500-3,000 INR for shawls) rather than town shops selling imitations. The Government Museum in Ooty has a good Toda exhibit.
Travel GuidesBoth are colonial-era retreats in the mountains. Both have lakes, tea, and mist. But one is a UNESCO train ride and the other is a cliff walk above the clouds. Here's how to choose.
Travel GuidesThe road up is terrifying. The toy train is slow. But what waits at the top — tea carpets, a 2,637m peak, and India's best chocolate — makes every bend worthwhile.
SeasonalOoty in April is a traffic jam on a mountain. Ooty in October is a private tea estate with fog. Same hill station, wildly different trips.
