A car-free island 19km offshore — home to 10,000+ quokkas (small marsupials famous for photogenic 'smiling' selfies). Ferry from Fremantle: AUD $80-100 return (25 minutes). Perth's revitalized waterfront precinct on the Swan River — pedestrian bridges, public art, restaurants, and a small artificial beach. Free to walk. The BHP Water Park has free splash pads for kids. Take a Swan River cruise to Fremantle or the Swan Valley from here (from $29). The Bell Tower houses the historic Swan Bells (entry $18). Best visited in the evening when the precinct lights up.

Perth is one of the world's most isolated major cities — the nearest large city (Adelaide) is 2,700km away. Direct international flights from Singapore (5.5 hrs), Doha (11 hrs), London (17 hrs Qantas non-stop). Domestic flights to Sydney (4.5 hrs) and Melbourne (4 hrs). Allow extra time if connecting — the east coast feels like a different country in terms of distance.
