The Phong Nha area was one of the most heavily bombed regions in history during the Vietnam War. UXO (unexploded bombs, mines, cluster munitions) still exists in jungle and rural areas. NEVER walk off marked trails, especially in forest areas. If you see a metal object in the ground, do not touch it — report it to locals. This is not a theoretical risk; clearance operations are ongoing.
Son Doong and Hang En caves are exclusively operated by Oxalis Adventure Tours. Other caves require official park tickets from the visitor center. Avoid touts offering 'unofficial' cave access — it's illegal and dangerous. Book Son Doong 6-12 months ahead (it sells out). Paradise Cave and Dark Cave can be visited independently with same-day tickets.
