Phuket tuk-tuks are notorious for inflated prices — a 10-minute ride can cost 400-500 THB. Use the Grab app instead (same ride for 100-150 THB). For airport transfers, pre-book through your hotel or use the airport minibus (200 THB to Patong). Renting a motorbike costs 200-300 THB/day but requires an IDP.
Red flags on beaches mean dangerous rip currents — people drown every year ignoring them, especially during monsoon season (June-October). Swim only at lifeguard-patrolled beaches. The undertow at Karon Beach is particularly dangerous during monsoon.
Never rent jet skis on Patong Beach — operators commonly claim pre-existing damage and demand thousands of baht. For motorbike rentals, photograph every scratch before riding off, and always wear a helmet (500 THB fine without one). Keep your passport in the hotel safe — leave a photocopy instead.
Tourist-area restaurants charge 3-5x local prices. Find local spots on side streets for pad thai (50-80 THB / ~$1.50-2.30), green curry with rice (60-100 THB), and fresh fruit shakes (30-50 THB). Night markets like Chillva Market offer full meals for under 100 THB.
Hotel-booked island day trips cost 2-3x more than booking through local agencies on Bangla Road or via Klook/GetYourGuide. A Phi Phi speedboat tour booked locally costs ~1,500 THB vs 3,000+ THB through hotels. Always confirm the tour includes national park fees and lunch.
Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples like Wat Chalong or Big Buddha. Sarongs are often available to borrow at temple entrances. Remove shoes before entering shrine buildings. Never point your feet at Buddha images. Photography is usually allowed but ask first.
