Travel Tips

Visa & Entry

E-Visa for Most Nationalities

US, UK, EU, and Australian citizens can apply for an Indian e-Tourist Visa online (30-day: $25, 1-year: $40, 5-year: $80) at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Apply at least 4 days before travel. Processing takes 3-5 business days.

Local Customs

Pushkar Is a Holy Vegetarian Town

Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are banned in Pushkar. All restaurants serve only vegetarian food. Some cafes on the outskirts quietly serve eggs, but meat and alcohol are genuinely unavailable. If this matters to you, stock up in Ajmer (14km away) before arriving.

Respect Lake Photography Etiquette

Do not photograph people bathing or performing rituals at the ghats without explicit permission. Dress modestly near the lake — cover shoulders and knees. Remove shoes when walking on the ghat steps. Leather items should be left at your hotel when visiting temples.

Safety

Beware the Pushkar Bracelet Scam

Priests at the ghats will tie a red thread (Pushkar passport) on your wrist and then demand a large donation (500-5,000 INR). If you don't want this, firmly say 'no' before they tie it. If you participate willingly, 50-100 INR is a reasonable donation. Never hand over your wallet or let them suggest an amount.

transport

Getting There and Getting Around

The nearest major airport is Jaipur (JAI), 150km away — take a taxi (~2,500 INR, 3 hours) or bus. Ajmer is 14km away with good train connections from Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai. Pushkar itself is tiny and walkable. Rent a bicycle (100-200 INR/day) or hire an auto-rickshaw for the sand dunes (~300 INR round trip).

Budget

Extremely Budget-Friendly Destination

Pushkar is one of India's cheapest tourist towns. Budget guesthouses: 500-1,000 INR/night. Thali meals: 80-150 INR. Chai: 10-20 INR. Camel ride: 300-500 INR per hour. A comfortable daily budget is 1,500-2,500 INR (~$18-30) including food, stay, and activities.
