The town is small enough to walk most places. Shared autos between Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula cost 10-20 INR. From Delhi, take the Shatabdi Express to Haridwar (4.5 hours, 700-1,200 INR) then a 30-min taxi to Rishikesh (300-400 INR). Or book a private taxi from Delhi for 4,000-5,000 INR one-way.
As a holy city, Rishikesh bans all meat, eggs, and alcohol within city limits. Every restaurant is vegetarian. This is law, not suggestion — don't ask for chicken or beer. The food is excellent regardless: try the cafes on Laxman Jhula Road for Israeli, Italian, and Indian vegetarian fare (meals 150-400 INR).
The Ganges is sacred — don't throw trash, use soap, or wear shoes near the river. Swimming is allowed in designated areas but the current is strong and cold (even in summer). Don't take selfies in dangerous spots on the river rocks — drownings occur every year from careless photo attempts.
Only book rafting through government-licensed operators (check for Uttarakhand Tourism approval). Ensure you get a life jacket and helmet. Don't raft during monsoon season (July-August) — the rapids become extremely dangerous. For bungee jumping at Jumpin Heights (3,550 INR / ~$43), advance booking is essential.
Ashram accommodation costs 300-1,500 INR/night (~$3.60-18) including meals and yoga classes. Parmarth Niketan and Sivananda Ashram are well-known options. Budget guesthouses near Laxman Jhula cost 500-1,500 INR. Cafe meals average 150-300 INR. You can easily spend under 2,000 INR/day total.
