Balboa Park museums offer free admission to San Diego residents on a rotating Tuesday schedule, but tourists can also take advantage. Check the schedule at bfrp.org. San Diego sunsets over the Pacific are spectacular and entirely free. Best spots: Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (Point Loma), Scripps Pier (La Jolla), Ocean Beach Pier, and the Coronado Ferry Landing. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset. Bring a jacket — coastal evenings cool quickly even in summer.
San Diego beaches are gorgeous but Pacific currents are stronger than they look. Always swim near lifeguard stations (staffed year-round at major beaches). Rip currents are the primary danger — if caught, swim parallel to shore, never fight the current. Water temperature ranges from 15°C (winter) to 21°C (summer). Wetsuits recommended outside July-September.
