Greece is part of the Schengen Area. US citizens get 90 days visa-free. Indian citizens need a Schengen visa — apply at the Greek consulate via VFS Global, 2-4 weeks processing. From 2025, non-EU visitors may need ETIAS authorization (€7, valid 3 years).
Public buses exist but run infrequently. Renting an ATV (€25-40/day) or small car (€40-70/day) gives freedom to explore beaches and villages. Book in advance for July-August. Roads are narrow and winding — drive cautiously, especially at night.
Hotels on the caldera rim (Oia, Fira, Imerovigli) cost 2-5x more than beach-side towns like Kamari or Perissa. A caldera hotel runs €200-800/night in summer; beach-side is €60-150. The views are worth splurging for 1-2 nights, then switch to save money.
Flights from Athens are 45 min and cost €50-150 each way. Ferries take 5-8 hours but cost €35-70 (deck) or €55-100 (cabin). The high-speed ferry (SeaJets or Blue Star) takes about 5 hours. Book ferries on FerryHopper.com at least a week ahead in summer.
Santorini is extremely seasonal. Most restaurants, hotels, and tour operators close from November to March. If visiting shoulder season (April or October), confirm your hotel and restaurant are open before booking. Fira stays open year-round.
July-August temperatures hit 35°C+ with almost no shade on hiking trails or beaches. Bring SPF 50+, a hat, and at least 2 liters of water per person for the Fira-Oia hike. Heatstroke is the biggest health risk on the island.
Not every day was perfect. The hot springs stained my swimsuit, the Oia sunset was underwhelming, and I almost cried at a fish taverna. Here's what really happened.
How many days do you need? Is it worth the money? Can you actually swim? Every question I get about Santorini, answered honestly.
Volcanic soil, 3,500-year-old grape varieties, and caldera views from every tasting room. Santorini's wine scene is the island's most underrated draw.
