Depart Siwa(30 minutes)
Overnight bus to Cairo (10 hrs, departs evening) or morning minibus to Marsa Matruh (4 hrs). Book the day before. Carry passport — military checkpoints on the road
Most nationalities can get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Cairo airport for $25 USD or apply online at visa2egypt.gov.eg. For Siwa specifically, you need no special permit — just pass through military checkpoints. Carry your passport at all times as soldiers may check it.
Siwa is 560 km from Cairo. West & Mid Delta Bus Co runs overnight buses from Cairo (10 hours, ~150 EGP/$3). From Marsa Matruh, shared minibuses take 4 hours (100 EGP). Alternatively, hire a private car from Cairo ($200-250 one way). No flights or trains to Siwa.
Siwa town is flat and small — bicycles ($3-5/day from guesthouses) are the ideal transport. Donkey carts (karetta) are the traditional local taxi, costing 10-20 EGP per trip. Motorized tuk-tuks are becoming common for longer distances to outlying springs and lakes.
Siwa is a deeply traditional Berber community. Women should cover shoulders and knees; swimwear is only appropriate at designated springs (not in town). Alcohol is not sold openly — some hotels serve it discreetly. Photographing women without permission is considered very disrespectful.
The annual 3-day Siyaha festival (October full moon) brings thousands of Siwi men together for communal meals, reconciliation, and prayers at Dakrour Mountain. Visitors are welcome to observe. Hotels fill up — book weeks in advance. It is Siwa's most important cultural event.
Siwa is one of Egypt's cheapest destinations. Guesthouses from $10-20/night, meals $2-5, 4x4 desert trips $40-60 for a vehicle (split 4 ways). The eco-lodge Adrere Amellal is the luxury exception at $300+/night. No ATMs until recently — carry cash from Cairo or Matruh just in case.
Phone signal (Vodafone/Orange) works in Siwa town but dies completely once you enter the Great Sand Sea. Always go with a guide who knows the dunes. Carry 3+ liters of water per person for desert excursions. Temperatures can exceed 50°C on the sand surface even when air temps are tolerable.
StoriesDay 1: The bus broke down in the desert. Day 3: I floated in a turquoise lake while a donkey watched from the shore. Siwa doesn't follow any plan.
Travel GuidesAlexander the Great went out of his way to visit. The bus takes 10 hours from Cairo. It's worth every minute.
Travel GuidesBoth have salt lakes where you bob like a cork. Both sit in deserts. But the experiences couldn't be more different.
