The top floor has a cafe. The building itself is the attraction — Art Deco details and original elevator preserved. Central location near Chihkan Tower.

US, UK, EU, Australian, Canadian, and many other passport holders get 90-day visa-free entry to Taiwan. No pre-registration needed. Tainan is a domestic destination reached from Taipei by HSR (1 hr 45 min) or from Kaohsiung (15 min by HSR, 30 min by local train).
Taiwan HSR from Taipei to Tainan takes 1 hr 45 min (~1,350 TWD). HSR Tainan Station is in Shalun — take the free shuttle or local train (25 min) to central Tainan Station. Within the city, rent a scooter (300-500 TWD/day with international license) or use the T-Bike public bicycle system (10 TWD/30 min). Uber and taxis are affordable.
Tainan's public transit is limited compared to Taipei. Renting a scooter (300-500 TWD/day) with an international driving permit gives maximum freedom for temple-hopping and food crawling. Most rental shops are near the train station. Helmets are mandatory. If not comfortable on a scooter, Uber is affordable (most rides under 200 TWD within the city).
Tainan's food culture starts early — many famous shops open at 5-6AM and sell out by noon. Milkfish congee, beef soup (served since 4AM at some places), and savory soy milk with fried dough are breakfast staples. Don't sleep in or you'll miss the best meals. Google Maps reviews are reliable for finding operating hours.
Tainan has the cheapest food in Taiwan. Street food items average 30-80 TWD (~$1-2.50 USD). A full day of eating 6-8 dishes costs under 500 TWD. Budget hotels from 800 TWD/night, boutique guesthouses from 1,500 TWD. Temple visits are free or under 70 TWD. A full day costs well under 2,000 TWD.
Summer temperatures reach 35°C+ with oppressive humidity. Carry water, use sunscreen, and plan temple and museum visits during the hottest hours (noon-3PM). Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) are everywhere and air-conditioned — perfect rest stops. Typhoon season (July-September) can bring sudden heavy rain and transit disruptions.
Travel GuidesCoffin bread, milkfish congee at dawn, and a 60 TWD bowl of noodles that started a culinary revolution — Tainan doesn't just have street food, it invented it.
StoriesI came to Tainan for the temples. I stayed for a 130-year-old noodle shop, a mangrove tunnel, and the realization that Taiwan's oldest city moves at exactly the right speed.
