Once the world's tallest building (508m), with an indoor observatory on the 89th floor and outdoor deck on the 91st. Entry: 600 TWD (~$19). Open 9AM-10PM daily. The 730-ton wind damper is visible from the observation deck. Allow 1.5-2 hours. Skip-the-line tickets available online. Best at sunset for day-to-night city views.

Taipei's largest and most famous night market with over 500 stalls. Must-try: stinky tofu (45 TWD), large fried chicken cutlet (70 TWD), bubble tea from Tiger Sugar. The underground food court has sit-down stalls. Open nightly 4PM-midnight, busiest 7-10PM. Take the MRT to Jiantan station (Red Line). Free entry.

Atmospheric hillside town 40 minutes east of Taipei that inspired Spirited Away's aesthetic. Narrow lantern-lit alleyways with tea houses, taro balls (50 TWD), and sweeping Pacific Ocean views. Take bus 1062 from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT (90 TWD, 90 min) or train to Ruifang then bus 788. Visit on weekday evenings for the best atmosphere. Allow 3-4 hours.

Natural sulfur hot springs just 30 minutes from downtown by MRT (Red Line to Xinbeitou). Free public foot bath at Beitou Hot Spring Park. Private soak rooms at Millennium Hot Spring from 40 TWD for public pools. Visit the Hot Spring Museum (free, closed Monday) housed in a 1913 Japanese bathhouse. The thermal valley steams dramatically year-round.

Taipei's oldest and most important temple (built 1738), a working Buddhist-Taoist-folk religion site with elaborate carved stone dragons, ornate roof details, and swirling incense. Free entry. Open 6AM-10PM daily. Join the morning prayer at 7AM for an authentic experience. Located in historic Wanhua district — combine with a walk through Bopiliao Historic Block nearby.

A short but steep 20-minute hike to one of the best free viewpoints of Taipei 101 and the city skyline. Trailhead is a 5-minute walk from Xiangshan MRT (Red Line). Best at sunset. Bring water — the stone steps are relentless. Less crowded than Taipei 101 observatory and completely free. There are several platform levels; the highest gives the best panorama.

A more manageable single-street night market known for the iconic black pepper bun stall at the entrance (60 TWD, expect a 15-min queue). Try the medicinal herbal stewed ribs and oyster vermicelli. The adjacent Ciyou Temple is beautifully lit at night. Open nightly 5PM-midnight. MRT to Songshan station (Green Line). A local favorite over the more touristy Shilin.
Arrive at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station (35 minutes, 160 TWD). Check into your hotel in the Ximending or Zhongshan district. Spend the evening getting your bearings in the neon-lit streets of Ximending, Taipei's Harajuku equivalent.

Airport MRT to Taoyuan Airport(40 minutes)
Take the Airport Express from Taipei Main Station (160 TWD). Arrive 3 hours before international flights. Tax refund counter is in the departure hall if you spent over 2,000 TWD at participating stores
US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian, and Japanese passport holders get 90-day visa-free entry. Indian passport holders need a visa — apply through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Bring proof of onward travel.
Buy an EasyCard (100 TWD deposit + top-up) at any MRT station or convenience store. It works on MRT, buses, YouBike, convenience stores, and gives a 20% discount on MRT fares. The Taipei MRT is spotless, efficient, and runs 6AM-midnight. Google Maps is accurate for all transit routing.
Taipei's public bike-share system YouBike 2.0 costs 5 TWD per 30 minutes — pay with EasyCard. Stations are everywhere. The riverside cycling paths along the Keelung River are excellent and car-free. Register with your EasyCard at any YouBike kiosk (needs a local phone number or use the app).
A full night market dinner costs 150-300 TWD ($5-10) — cheaper than cooking. Convenience stores (7-Eleven and FamilyMart on every block) have excellent hot food, tea eggs (10 TWD), and onigiri. A sit-down restaurant meal is 120-250 TWD. Taipei is one of the best food cities in Asia at backpacker prices.
When ordering bubble tea, you'll be asked about sugar level (full, 70%, half, 30%, none) and ice level (full, less, little, none). Start with 30% sugar and less ice. The original pearl milk tea from Chun Shui Tang or Tiger Sugar runs 60-80 TWD (~$2-2.50). Never pay more than 100 TWD — you're overpaying.
Eating, drinking (even water), and chewing gum are strictly prohibited on the MRT and in stations. Fines start at 1,500 TWD (~$47). This is actively enforced. Wait until you exit the yellow line at the station entrance.
Typhoon season runs June-October. The government issues work/school closure announcements (check DGPA website). If a typhoon hits, stay indoors — businesses close, public transport stops. Hotels will inform you. It usually passes in 1-2 days. Travel insurance covering weather disruption is strongly recommended.
