Ferries between island groups take 12-18 hours and can be rough. Most whale trips are based in Vava'u.
Sunday is strictly observed in Tonga — almost everything closes including restaurants, shops, and attractions. Swimming and even noise at beaches can offend locals. Stock up on food Saturday. Many Tongans attend church in their finest clothes — visitors are welcome but dress modestly (no shorts or tank tops). Plan activities for other days.
Tonga is conservative. Men and women should cover knees and shoulders in towns and villages. Swimwear is fine on resort beaches but not in villages. The ta'ovala (woven mat worn around the waist) is traditional formal wear — you'll see Tongans wearing them over business suits. Showing respect for local customs earns genuine warmth and hospitality.

You must be a confident open-water swimmer for whale encounters. Operators provide wetsuits and snorkels but not life jackets (they spook whales). Ocean conditions can be rough with swells over 2 meters. Motion sickness medication recommended for the boat ride. Follow your guide's instructions exactly — approach distances from whales are strictly regulated.
