Avoid Laventille, Sea Lots, and East Port of Spain — these neighborhoods have high crime. Tourist areas (Ariapita Ave, Queen's Park Savannah, Maraval) are generally safe. Tobago is much safer overall. During Carnival, stick with your mas band and avoid carrying valuables.
Doubles (curried chickpeas in fried bara bread) is the national street food — TT$7-12 (~US$1-2) from vendors island-wide. Roti, pelau, and corn soup are also cheap and filling (TT$25-50). Restaurant dining runs US$10-25 for mains. Stag and Carib beers are ~US$2-3.
