US, UK, EU, and Australian citizens can apply for an e-Tourist visa online (30-day: $25, 1-year: $40, 5-year: $80). Apply at least 4 days before arrival. Udaipur airport handles domestic flights; most international visitors fly into Delhi or Mumbai and connect.
Auto-rickshaws are the primary transport. Airport to city center costs 400-500 INR (~$5-6) pre-paid. Within the city, rides cost 50-150 INR. Use Ola or Uber for fair pricing. The old city is best explored on foot. For day trips to Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur (80-90 km), hire a taxi for 2,000-2,500 INR.
Udaipur's rooftop restaurants offer stunning lake views at reasonable prices. A meal at Ambrai Restaurant or Upre costs 800-1,500 INR (~$10-18) per person. For budget eats, try thali meals in the old city for 100-200 INR (~$1.20-2.40). Don't miss the street food at the clock tower market — dal baati churma is the local specialty.
Haggling is expected at Hathi Pol bazaar and the old city markets — start at 40-50% of the asking price for handicrafts and textiles. Miniature paintings range from 500-50,000 INR depending on quality and artist. Never bargain at restaurants, museums, or for prepaid transport. Keep small bills handy.
Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar can be partially dry from March to June. Visit September to February for full lakes and the best photos. The monsoon (July-August) fills the lakes and the Monsoon Palace lives up to its name, but some outdoor activities may be limited.
Auto-rickshaw drivers will offer to take you to 'better' shops or hotels for free — they earn 30-50% commission on your purchases, inflating prices. Book hotels directly and navigate to shops yourself. If a price seems high at a driver-recommended shop, leave and find the same item elsewhere for half the cost.
Travel GuidesEverything from lake levels to commission scams to whether the Lake Palace Hotel is worth the splurge. No fluff, just answers.
StoriesI came for the palaces. I stayed for the light — the way it hits marble, water, and the faces of people who've lived here forever.
SeasonalThe lakes are full, the palaces reflect perfectly, and the Monsoon Palace actually earns its name. July through September is Udaipur's secret season.
