The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from YVR to downtown in 25 minutes for ~$10 CAD (including $5 YVR AddFare). Buy a Compass Card at the airport station. Taxis cost ~$35-40 CAD. Uber/Lyft are available but surge pricing is common at peak arrival times.
Vancouver's transit (SkyTrain, SeaBus, buses) covers all tourist areas. A day pass is ~$11 CAD. For North Shore attractions (Capilano, Grouse), take the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay then local bus. Rent bikes from Mobi ($2.50 CAD/30 min) for the seawall.
Expect $20-35 CAD for a casual restaurant meal. Save money at food trucks (Japadog, Tacofino), Granville Island Market, or Richmond's Chinese restaurants along No. 3 Road — arguably the best Chinese food outside Asia. Tip 15-20% at sit-down restaurants.
The Downtown Eastside (around East Hastings between Main and Abbott) has visible homelessness and drug use. It's not dangerous for passersby but can be uncomfortable. Walk through quickly or take an alternate route. The rest of downtown is very safe.
Vancouver gets 160+ rainy days per year, mostly October through March. Pack a waterproof jacket and shoes — umbrellas alone won't cut it. Locals don't let rain stop them. The upside: mild 5-8°C winters mean no brutal cold.
