One of the world's most accessible active volcanoes on Tanna Island — drive to within 300 meters of the crater rim and watch explosive eruptions fling molten lava into the night sky. Entry: VUV 10,000 (~$85). Open daily (weather permitting). Best visited at dusk for the lava glow. Fly from Port Vila to Tanna (1 hour, from VUV 15,000 one-way). Allow a full day trip or overnight.
Crystal-clear, luminous blue freshwater swimming holes fed by underground springs on Espiritu Santo island. Nanda Blue Hole (Jacky's Blue Hole) is the most popular — VUV 1,500 (~$13) entry, a rope swing drops you into impossibly blue water. Riri Blue Hole is quieter and more scenic. Rent a car or join a tour from Luganville. Bring a waterproof camera.
The original bungee jump — men leap from wooden towers 20-30 meters high with only vine ropes tied to their ankles, as part of an ancient yam harvest ritual. Performed April-June only on Pentecost Island. Witness from designated viewing areas (VUV 15,000-20,000 including transport). Book through local tour operators. A raw, unforgettable cultural experience unlike anything else on Earth.
A stunning white-sand beach where volcanic gas bubbles up through the sand at the waterline, creating a 'champagne' fizzing effect. VUV 500 (~$4) entry via the local village. Clear turquoise water, great snorkeling off the reef. 45 minutes north of Luganville by car. Bring your own food and water — facilities are minimal. The effervescence is most visible at low tide.
Kava (a mild sedative root drink) is central to Vanuatu's culture — nakamals (kava bars) open at dusk in every village and town. A coconut shell of kava costs VUV 100-200 (~$1-2). Port Vila has tourist-friendly nakamals; on outer islands, join village ceremonies for the authentic experience. Expect muddy, earthy taste — it numbs your lips. Don't eat for 2 hours before drinking.
A 200-meter WWII luxury liner turned troopship, sunk in 1942, lying in 20-70 meters off Espiritu Santo. One of the world's most accessible large wreck dives — the bow is just 20m deep. Entry-level divers can explore the upper decks. Two-tank dive from VUV 15,000 (~$130). The 'Lady' porcelain statue at 40m is the signature sight. Allan Power Dive Tours is the original operator.

Air Vanuatu and Unity Airlines connect Port Vila (Efate) to Tanna, Espiritu Santo, Pentecost, and other islands. Domestic flights range VUV 10,000-20,000 (~$85-170) one-way. Book early — planes are small (20-70 seats) and fill fast. Inter-island cargo boats exist but are slow and uncomfortable. On islands, rent a car or hire a local guide with a truck.
Nearly all land in Vanuatu is customary (clan-owned). Always ask permission and pay the small custom fee (VUV 500-2,000) before accessing beaches, waterfalls, or blue holes on village land. This is expected, not a tourist rip-off — it's how communities fund infrastructure. Being respectful earns you warm hospitality and often a local guide.
Outside resort areas, Vanuatu culture is conservative. Women should cover shoulders and wear skirts or sarongs below the knee when visiting villages. Men should avoid going shirtless. Swimwear is fine on resort beaches but not at village beaches or blue holes. Bringing a small gift (rice, sugar, or kava root) when visiting a village is deeply appreciated.
Vanuatu sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire with several active volcanoes. Mount Yasur erupts constantly (that's the attraction). Check the Vanuatu Meteorological and Geohazards Department website for current alert levels before visiting volcanic sites. Cyclone season (November-April) can disrupt travel plans — buy travel insurance.

Market food (Mama's Market in Port Vila) is cheapest — fresh tropical fruit, lap lap (local staple), and grilled fish for under VUV 500. ATMs exist in Port Vila and Luganville only — bring cash for outer islands.
