UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — Vienna's coffee house tradition dates to 1683. Must-visit: Cafe Central (where Trotsky played chess, melange ~6 EUR), Cafe Sacher (home of the original Sachertorte, 9.50 EUR per slice), and Cafe Hawelka (bohemian, open late). Order a melange (Viennese cappuccino), sit for hours reading newspapers on wooden rods, and nobody will rush you. A cultural institution, not just coffee.

A Baroque palace complex housing Gustav Klimt's 'The Kiss' — one of the world's most famous paintings. Upper Belvedere entry: 16.70 EUR. Open 10AM-6PM (Fri until 9PM). The gardens between the Upper and Lower Belvedere are free and offer the classic postcard view of Vienna's skyline. Less crowded than Schonbrunn. Allow 2-3 hours for the museum and gardens.

Vienna's Gothic landmark with its distinctive zigzag-tiled roof. Main nave: free entry. South tower climb (343 steps, 6 EUR) offers the best city panorama. North tower elevator (8 EUR) reaches the massive Pummerin bell. Catacombs tour: 6.50 EUR (every 30 minutes). Open 6AM-10PM. The cathedral is at the geographic center of Vienna — everything radiates from here. Allow 1-1.5 hours.

Don't miss this — Vienna's most popular open-air market stretching 1.5 km with 120+ stalls. International food, spices, cheese, wine, and the best people-watching in the city. Lunch at a market stand: 8-15 EUR. Open Mon-Sat 6AM-7:30PM (restaurants later). Saturday flea market at the western end (6AM-2PM) has vintage treasures. Allow 2 hours for browsing and eating.

Vienna has live classical music every single night. Musikverein (home of the Vienna Philharmonic, Golden Hall acoustics are legendary, from 40 EUR), Konzerthaus, and smaller venues. For budget options: church concerts (15-30 EUR), or the Musikverein's standing room (6-8 EUR). The Mozart & Strauss tourist concerts (35-85 EUR) are crowd-pleasers but not the 'real' experience. Check wienerphilharmoniker.at for schedules.

The biggest mistake tourists make: ordering 'a coffee' in Vienna. You must specify the type — melange (cappuccino), Einspanner (espresso with whipped cream in a glass), Brauner (coffee with a dash of cream), or Schwarzer (black). Your coffee comes with a glass of water (always free, always refilled). You can sit for hours without being rushed — it's the Viennese way. Tipping: round up or 5-10%.
Vienna is more formal than most European cities. For the opera, men should wear a suit or at minimum a blazer; women a dress or dressy separates. Jeans and sneakers are fine for sightseeing but feel out of place at upscale coffee houses and concert halls. Austrians value 'Gruss Gott' (God greet you) as a greeting — use it when entering shops and restaurants.
Many world-class experiences are free: Schonbrunn gardens, Belvedere gardens, Prater park, Danube Island beaches, Rathaus events (film festival in summer, Christmas market in winter). First Sunday of the month: many federal museums are free. Standing room at the Staatsoper (4-10 EUR) is the best budget hack. Beisl (traditional Viennese pubs) serve lunch specials (Mittagsmenu) for 8-12 EUR.
Vienna is consistently ranked among the top 3 safest and most livable cities globally. Violent crime is extremely rare. Standard precautions: watch for pickpockets at Stephansplatz and on tram Line D. The U-Bahn is safe at all hours. Keep an eye on belongings at outdoor cafe tables. Emergency: 112 (EU-wide), 133 (police), 144 (ambulance).
